Prepare for triggers 
Prepare for triggers by thinking carefully about what they are like when you are in a state of mind 
where you might be vulnerable to them, in order to prepare the mind to get ready to handle those 
situations. First you must know what can be triggers for you. It can be as simple as passing by an 
attractive person on the street. Or it can be a response to stress, uncomfortable social situations, or 
unhappiness. Whatever they might be, keep these triggers to a minimum in the early days of a 
reboot. At the same time, practice strengthening your mind in the case that these triggers come 
about. 
Three pieces of advice on how to achieve this: 
1) Get a game plan to deal with urges 
Visualization is such an important tool, used by athletes, public speakers, and successful people alike. 
Thinking about a situation and seeing yourself in it, is a form of practice that prepares you for critical 
moments. When the time comes, you are able to not get caught up in the moment unprepared, but 
instead are able to think clearly and act accordingly. 
This technique should help prepare for the situation when you have strong urges. Think about what 
it is like when you have urges, and then think about what you need to do in such situations. Prepare 
yourself for what it feels like and come up with a clear game plan once this state of mind hits. Maybe 
it’s going out in public, somewhere where it is not possible to relapse. In general, try not to be alone, 
as relapse is more likely in these situations. Always have an escape plan beforehand. 
There will be times where you think you have it under control. Don’t get complacent – stick to your 
game plan and keep focusing on improving and distancing yourself from porn. 
Use the visualization exercise to help achieve your long-term goals also. Visualization can be helpful 
to plan out and find a way towards realizing your ideal future. As a thought exercise, think about 


how your life would be ideally if everything went as you wanted. This image can get stronger with 
repeated practice. Now realize everything you want is achievable. With deliberate work, you can get 
closer to this. Once you can picture yourself happy, without porn, and living a positive life, you can 
plan and work towards the goal now that it is within your reach.
