Dr. David Smith - How To Quit Porn (2nd Edition)
Find something genuinely enjoyable
During an addiction, nothing may seem enjoyable, but you need to find something you enjoy to replace the urges and uncomfortable feelings you might get. Maybe try to do something creative, as this will make use of your creative powers and harness your unused sexual energy. Doing positive things will take your mind away from negative thoughts and emotions. Useful things to do include sports, music, and writing. Anything that pushes your mind and challenges you in a positive way. You will feel progress as you leave your mark on the world. As we get older, we often forget to seek out genuine joyful moments, and instead replace fulfilling feelings with unsatisfying sexual habits. Meditation Being aware and mindful is critical to defeating addiction. This can be cultivated through daily meditation. There is a plethora of guided meditations to help you get started. Train your mind to enjoy the simple things. Enjoy having a clear mind and not being cluttered with unnecessary thoughts. Take time away from a busy day to do nothing. As the world around us becomes increasingly busy and pushes us to do more, relax and take a step back to be more deliberate in your actions and thinking. Be especially mindful about using electronic devices and accessing the Internet. Rarely is the first thought of an addict to open their computer and watch porn. Relapses usually occur when one has spent time on the web without being mindful of any purpose or what they are actually doing. Suddenly and they are in no position to resist. Fundamentally, porn addiction is an issue with Internet addiction and mental overstimulation. When combined with the sexual impulses in the mind, it can become very addictive and detrimental. Create punishment for unhealthy sexual thoughts Applying the very simple psychological technique of classical conditioning can be effective to alter behaviors. By adding a positive or negative stimulus as a response, you can change the reward and punishment structure of an action in your mind. For example, keep a rubber band around your wrist and snap yourself if you have any sexual thoughts. Gradually you will associate urges with an uncomfortable snap against the wrist, which can reduce the frequency you have those thoughts, as well as the desire to seek out those thoughts. One of my patients took this to the next level and would shock himself with an electrical wristband when encountering urges. He found this to be uncomfortable but very effective. It is key to be consistent with how you apply this. Thinking a sexual thought will need to guarantee a shock, creating a causal mapping in the mind between the two. Reward yourself on the positive side as well. Enjoy winning the fight against the urge. As you persevere through difficulty, suddenly your urges will fade away and you will have a genuine sense of accomplishment. Cheer at this very moment of victory and congratulate yourself. Make a victory pose, get something good to eat, jump for joy, pat yourself on your back, and celebrate your success! More moments like these and the addiction will be crippled, unable to compete with the power of accomplishment. Download 0.56 Mb. Do'stlaringiz bilan baham: |
