Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) technology is an approach 
that has become increasingly popular in language teaching in recent years. It involves 
the use of a second language, such as English, as a medium of instruction in teaching 
other subjects like science, math, and social studies. The main goal of CLIL is to 
develop students’ communicative competence in English while at the same time
improving their understanding of other subjects. In this article, we will explore how 
CLIL technology can help in developing communicative competence in teaching 
English.

What is Communicative Competence? Communicative competence refers to the 
ability to communicate effectively in a particular language. It involves not only 
having a good command of grammar and vocabulary but also being able to use 
language appropriately in different contexts. Communicative competence includes 
four components: linguistic competence, sociolinguistic competence, discourse 
competence, and strategic competence [1]. 
Linguistic competence refers to the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary 
needed to produce and understand language. Sociolinguistic competence involves 
knowing how to use language appropriately in different social situations. Discourse 
competence involves understanding how to structure language in different contexts 
such as conversations, narratives, and presentations. Strategic competence involves 
knowing how to use different communication strategies to achieve communicative 
goals. 
How does CLIL Technology help in Developing Communicative Competence? 
CLIL technology provides an opportunity for students to use English in a meaningful 
context. By using English as a medium of instruction in other subjects, students are 
exposed to authentic language use, which helps them develop their communicative 
competence. Here are some ways CLIL technology can help in developing 
communicative competence: 
1. Exposure to Authentic Language Use 
CLIL technology provides students with exposure to authentic language use. 
Students are exposed to English as it is used in real-life situations, rather than just 
learning grammar rules and vocabulary lists. This exposure helps students develop 
their linguistic competence and sociolinguistic competence. 
2. Integration of Language and Content 
CLIL technology integrates language and content, which helps students develop 
their discourse competence. Students learn how to structure language in different 
contexts such as conversations, narratives, and presentations. This integration also 
helps students develop their strategic competence as they learn how to use different 
communication strategies to achieve communicative goals.
