CHAPTER II. THE SEMANTIC FUNCTION OF PARENTESIS IN ENGLISH SENTENCES

2.1. Structural characteristics of incoming structures

In modern linguistics, there is a problem of choosing a term for this phenomenon, in different sources you can find different definitions: introductory words, introductory constructions, introductory sentence member, parenthesis, adjunct. Such authors as V.N. Yartseva, D.E. Rosenthal, I.B. Golub use the term "introductory words" [1, p.259]; I.P. Ivanova, V.N., Zhigadlo adhere to the term "introductory member of the sentence" [20, p.299]; L.L. Iofik uses such a concept as the introductory components of a sentence or parenthesis [43, p.85].
And Professor M.Ya. Bloch uses the term "adjunct" when describing this phenomenon [19, p.25]. As it was already defined earlier, introductory constructions include constructions that, without entering into syntactic relations with other members of the sentence, introduce an element of additional information into it. Modal, emotional, evaluative meanings, the source of the message - and in general, any additional message not provided in advance by the structure of the sentence. Introductory and plug-in structures are similar in structure.
Groups:
1. introductory words
2. introductory phrases . introductory sentences
The classification is based on the correlation of introductory and plug-in constructions with a certain type of syntactic units. Unfortunately , spring never comes. The introductory word expresses the feeling of the speaker, and, consequently, the subjective modality.
The introductory construction allows any position in the sentence: It kept me from driving her crazy on rainy days, I guess [2. c.8]. Apparently deciding that it was easier to define primitive baptistery than closed communion [43, p.11].did not miss her, but I think Jem did [2, p.19].
Whereas the plug-in structure cannot occupy an absolutely initial position.
An insertion construction is an additional message, any in content, that does not precede the moment of speech, but follows it. Introductory constructions by the speaker are predictable in advance. Formally, they are not connected with the sentence, the speaker can choose any position for them in the formal structure of the sentence. Schematically compiling a sentence with an introductory construction: the speaker assumes that there are two levels of content in the sentence: primary (main) and secondary (additional) - an assessment of this fact by the speaker.
Precisely because the sentence is initially conceived as meaningfully two-level, the speaker has the opportunity to freely choose the position of the introductory construction. When compiling a sentence with an insertion structure, the addressee initially assumes a single-level sentence, but already at the moment of speech generation, there is a need for an additional level of utterance, an additional message, which is included in the original sentence as it unfolds.
The plug-in structure is not initially provided, so it cannot occupy the initial position. The plug-in construction is the level of speech as such. They are a sign of spontaneous oral speech, which does not provide for a conditionally preliminary moment of organization. In written speech, inserts are needed, first of all, to imitate oral speech.
Despite the fact that introductory and interstitial constructions in the structure of a sentence are equally free and optional, from a content point of view, introductory constructions are still more connected, they are more predetermined, while insertions do not have any initial predetermination. That is why the study of the semantics of sentences with introductory constructions is especially relevant at this stage in the development of intercultural communication.
