Sergei Vasilevich Ivanov
b. Ruza, Moscow region 1864, d. Svistukha, Moscow region 1910
Scene of life outside a snow-covered village in re-
lation to a feast. Signed I. Ivanov (in Cyrillic let-
ters). Oil on canvas. 73 x 54 cm.
Provenance: Private Danish collection since the
1980's.
In the tradition of Russian art history Sergei Vasile-
vich Ivanov is usually considered a critical realist. It is
a fact that the artist’s earlier works, relating to the se-
cond generation of “The Wanderers”, stand out with
an extreme naturalist and revolutionary-democratic
direction. Travelling around Russia and observing the
peasants leaving their birthplaces in the hope of a bet-
ter future, he created a series of paintings of the people
on the move – terrible scenes with an emphasized grue-
some tone. At the same time he also worked on a series
of paintings depicting arrested people.
From the mid-1890’s Ivanov increasingly refered to
motives from life in the Russian middle-ages in his
works, much like the works of A. P. Rjabushkin who
was his colleague in the “Association of 36 Artists”
and a painter of the Russian patriarchal life. Contra-
ry to the usual view on historical genres like battles or
heroic deeds, Ivanov painted dynamic, free and colour-
ful scenes in a modern style dedicated to the way of life
in old-Russia. In the same period Ivanov’s works are
further influenced by Impressionism. He focused on re-
trospective landscapes and the national distinctiveness
of the Russian people in the era before Peter the Great
and thus, characterized his view on different “folk ty-
pes”.
The present painting represents a perfect example of the
artist’s work in the above-mentioned period – a city-
street with people walking around in wintertime. Ac-
cording to the previous owner, the theme of the pain-
ting is Pancake week (Maslenitsa), the Russian fort-
night national holiday.

and worked in e.g. Russia, France and Switzerland.
The last year of his life he worked in Kiev, and the pre-
sent painting was probably made in this period.

Ivan Fedorovitch Choultsé
b. St. Petersburg 1877, d. Paris 1932
Winter landscape. Signed Iw. F. Choultsé.
Oil on canvas. 73 x 100 cm.
The landscape painter Choultse studied painting un-
der the guidance of C. J. Krighitsky and became a
court painter. He took part in the exhibitions of the
Academy of Fine Arts and in Krigitsky's Society. He
participated in exhibitions of the Individualists Art
Society, and his works were on the 1st and the 2nd ex-
hibitions of the Artists' Companionship.
After the Revolution of 1917 he immigrated to Paris
and in 1923 he began exhibiting at the Salon des Arti-
stes Français. During that period of his life Choultse
paid special attention to winter landscapes and
mountain sceneries. The artist exhibited in Paris

Nikolai Petrovich Bogdanoff-Belsky
b. Shopotovo, Smolensk region 1868, d. Latvia 1945
Two girls sitting on a bathing jetty with their feet
in the water. Signed N. Bogdanoff Belsky. Oil on
canvas. 79 x 67 cm.
The paintings of the naturalist painter N. Bogdanoff-
Belsky mainly focus on rural life. Furthermore he pain-
ted portraits and landscapes.
Bogdanoff-Belsky was born in 1868 in the village of
Shopotovo in the Smolensk region.
His father was unknown, therefore he was given the
last name Bogdanov to which he later added Belsky ac-
cording to the name of his native district.
He studied at the school of S.A. Rachinsky and at the
icon workshop in the Troitse-Sergiev monastery. From
1884 he studied at the Moscow Art Institute for Pain-
ting, Sculpture and Architecture under V.E. Makov-
sky, V.D. Polenov and I.M. Prjanishnikov. Between
1894-95 he studied at the Art Academy in St. Peters-
burg, his teachers including, among others, I.E. Re-
pin. Susequently, he studied in Paris under F. Cormon
and F. Colarossi.
From 1890 he participated in the exhibitions of the ar-
tist group “The Wanderers” and in 1895 he became a
member of the group. From 1909 he was Chairman of
the A. Kuindzhi society until 1921 when he moved to
Latvia where he died in 1945.
The present painting, which is carried out in a colour-
ful impressionist manner, reflects the theme of child-
hood which was one of his favorite subjects. Bogdanoff-
Belsky devoted a substantial part of his artistic life to
this theme, because he thought children to be the most
suitable and genuine models. This can be observed
from the numerous paintings of countryside children
that he painted.
Provenance: Private Danish collection. Bought in

b. Marinpol 1841, d. St. Petersburg 1910

A Ukrainian village at night. Signed
A. Kuindzhi. Oil on canvas.
22 x 35 cm.

Kuindzhi was born into a tailor’s family.
Having moved to St. Petersburg where he
unsuccessfully applied for admission to
The Imperial Academy of Fine Arts a
couple of times, he began to imitate Aiva-
zovsky who was his favourite painter. In
1868 his work "Tatar House" was ac-
cepted for an academic exhibition and
subsequently he was admitted to The Im-
perial Academy of Fine Arts as an associ-
ate. From 1874 he was a member of a
group of artists known as "Peredvizhni-
ki" or The Wanderers. After traveling in
Western Europe he was influenced by the
Barbizon School, and in 1876 he painted
"The Ukrainian Night" which marked
the beginning of his nocturnal landsca-
pes. Two years later this painting was ex-
hibited in Paris, and Kuindzhi was pro-
claimed the most groundbreaking and in-
teresting of the young Russian artists.
Kuindzhi's style combines the exoticism,
extravagance and passion for visual ef-
fects of Romanticism with the naturalism
of the Russian academic school. His exhi-
bitions always held great attraction to the
public. Between 1894 and 1897 Kuindz-
hi headed the department of landscape
painting at the Academy, and in this ca-
pacity he taught many future symbolists
and expressionists such as K.b. Bogajev-
skij, N. K. Roerikh and A. A. Rylov.
Kuindzhi is rightly considered to be the
father of Russian symbolist and expressi-
onist landscape painting.
The last years of his life Kuindzhi ceased
to exhibit his works. He isolated himself
from the outside world and experimented
in his workshop. Because he was now a
very wealthy man he could afford to con-
centrate on giving private art lessons,
and in 1909 he founded the Kuindzhi
Society, an independent society of artists.
He donated 150,000 roubles and a plot
of land in the Crimea, and when he died
he left his entire fortune and his pain-
tings to the society.

Nikolai Semenowich Nikol`skii,

b. 1864

Cossacks on rest. Signed N. Nikolskii. Oil on
canvas. 153 x 122 cm.

In the 15-17th centuries the Cossacks called themselves
the free peasants, they were hiding from the prosecuti-
ons of the Russian authorities and religious trials in
the free grounds of southern Russia.
For centuries the Cossack-theme has inspired many ar-
tists. This can be told from a wide interest in their
customs, religion and the many legends of the 16th
century Saporoshkiy Sechi republic. In the eyes of the
Russians the Cossacks were the personification of the
free life. The importance of this can be explained
through the fact that serfdom in Russia was only abo-
lished in 1861 and the freedom the Cossacks enjoyed
was for a long time considered a symbol of the liberati-
on of Russia from slavery.
The Cossacks were seen as fierce warriors, traditionally
living on the outskirts of the Empire. In the 18th cen-
tury the Cossacks were organised and given special pri-
vileges serving as guardians of the frontiers of the em-
pire. In the beginning of the 20th century there existed
11 Cossack armies – Donskoye, Kubanskoye, Oren-
burgskoye, Terskoye, Sibirskoye, Uralskoye, Astrak-
hanskoye, Semirechenskoye and Ussuriyskoye armies.
After the revolution the Soviet authorities implemented
an anti-Cossack policy leading to mass-terror and in
1920 the Cossacks had disappeared. Since the late
1980s attempts have been made to revitalise the Cos-
sacks.
The present painting represents an excellent work of the
academic painting school. The Cossacks depicted in
the painting are dressed in the uniform of the Cauca-
sian Cossack armies, established during the reform of
the military regimentals of Nikolai II in 1900. This
means that the painting is most likely from the begin-
ning of the 20th century.

Mikhail Matveevich Ivanov ?,
b. 1748, d. 1823
Duke Potemkin's death. Signed or inscribed on
the stretcher M. Ivanov (in Cyrillic letters) and
inscribed "The Death of Potemkin". Oil on can-
vas mounted on board. 73 x 107 cm.
Two texts in Russian and German are inscribed in the
low part of the painting with an epitaph supposedly by
the russian poet Vasily Grigorievich Ruban (1742-
1795) on the death of Potemkin:
“The death of Duke Potemkin of Tavria and Russia,
Great Hetman of the Ekaterinoslav-cossacks, etc.
Furthermore an account of his real place of death and of
the people who were present at the time of his death
which occurred in Moldavia on the 5 of October 1791.
What a terrible scene – such a cruel death.
Whom are you taking from us
Like a spark, in an instant
Hero! Your famous life has faded
After victoriously subduing the enemy’s city
Your life ended on the steppe
Without you ever having a chance
To feel the sweet taste of your fame
Until we…
You will live in our hearts
We will not stop crying bitter tears
And with them water your ashes”
Grigorii Alexandrovich Potemkin (1739-1791) was for
a period Catherine the Great’s closest assistant in politi-
cal and economical matters as well as in Russia’s inter-
national affairs politics. In 1774 he received the title of
Duke in St. Petersburg.
This scene of Potemkin’s death was first painted by the
Italian artist Francesco Giuseppe Casanova (1727-
1802) by the order of Catherine the Great. Mikhail Iva-
nov made a copy of the Italian artist’s work for further
use as a model for a print called “The death of Potemkin
in the Bessarabian steppe” made by the Russian master-
engraver Gavrila Ivanovich Skourodumoff (1755-
1792). Currently, the engraving is kept in the Russian
State Museum in St. Petersburg. The first edition of the
print was made with the same poem as in the painting.
The second edition included a French and a German de-
scription (dictionary of D. A. Rovinsky, St. Petersburg,
Academy of Sciences printhouse, 1895, page 889-992,
engraving number 22).
The painter Mikhail Matveevich Ivanov was one of the
founders of Russian landscape painting. From the
1780’s to the early 1790’s he was part of the court-staff
of Potemkin and travelled with his soldiers, having the
rank of Premier-Major. Ivanov was not a strong figure
painter which is evident when looking at the painting.
The figures in Skurodumoff’s engraving are much better
executed. This is a strong indication that the painting is
in fact Ivanov’s original work that was meant to serve
as a mere model for the master-engraver. Furthermore the
name of Potemkin was deliberately “forgotten”  when
Cathrine’s son, Paul I, gained power after her death.
This indicates that the painting most probably is pain-
ted during the reign of Cathrine the Great (1762-1796).
