Vladimir Tchernychev,
b. St. Petersborg 1952
"Vitrage erotique". Composition. Signed on verso Tchernychev
Paris 1982. Oil on canvas. 116 x 89 cm.
Vladimir Tchernychev was educated at the Serov Academy of Fine Arts
in St. Petersburg in 1973. In 1978 he left Russia and took up residence
in France in order to escape the oppression of the regime and in order to
be able to develop his own personal and independent art. His work as a
painter must be perceived as a continuation of the non-conformist move-
ment whose leading exponents he met in France. They worked and exhi-
bited together, for excample in New York  in 1980, at the exhibition " Art
russe non Official" at the Gallery Moscow-Peterburg and in France in
1981 at the exhibition " 25 ans de L`art russe non  official" at the Mu-
sesee de L àrt russe.
The non-conformist movement emerged in the 1960’s as a reaction against
the regime. Since the mid-1970’s the most important exponents of this mo-
vement have lived and worked in Paris. In 1986 Tchernychev founded the
association of Russian artists with the purpose of propagating the know-
ledge of young ex-Soviet artists in Paris. His style as a painter is characte-
rised by a mystical unitism, expressed in strong symbolist renditions, the
richness of his palette calls to mind dreams, myths and Russian culture
and presents the soul in a complete imaginary universe of beauty and en-
chantment.
