Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna
Romanova of Russia
Grand Duchess Olga (1882-1960) was daughter of
Czar Alexander III of Russia and Empress Dag-
mar, b. Princess of Denmark. In her childhood
and youth the Empress had been taught by the
painter Heinrich Buntzen, and therefore she was
able to discover the artistic talents of her daughter
at an early age. Subsequently she arranged for
Olga to be taught by the painter Stanislaw Johan-
nowitsch Zukowski (1873-1944) which was quite
unusual at the Russian Court. Henceforth, the
Grand Duchess's main recreational activity was to
paint - in a slightly impressionist style and often
choosing motifs such as gardens or flower ar-
rangements. After the Russian revolution, in
1920, Olga and her husband, Colonel Nikolai Ku-
likovsky, and their two sons fled to Denmark
where they took up residence with Dagmar at
Hvidøre Castle. In spite of cruel memories of the
Russian civil war, Olga managed to maintain great
joie de vivre in Denmark, in part because she con-
tinued to paint. When Dagmar died in 1928 the
Kulikovskys moved to Knudsminde, Ballerup, Co-
penhagen. In  1948  they decided to immigrate to
Canada. Olga died as the last Grand Duchess in
the world, far from Russia and Denmark - a poor
widow who had nevertheless retained her strong
personality and her artistic abilities.

Provenance: The Russian art collector
Igor Dytjenko. A Russian newspaper
article about Dytjenko's collection with
depictions of the two drawings sold he-
re is included in the lot. In addition,
the lot includes a copy of the buyer's
certificate where Dytjenko has signed
for the sale of the two drawings to a
Danish buyer in 1996. Bogomazov
was educated at the Academy of Fine
Arts in Kiev in the years after 1900,
and he since participated in a number
of important avant-garde exhibitions.
He was strongly inspired by Italian fu-
turism and participated in the cu-
bism/futurism exhibition in Moscow
in 1912.
Bogomazov was able to blend the
avantgardism from Kiev with French
cubism and Italian futurism. The lar-
ger part of the motives in his drawings
and paintings are inspired by city life
and architecture in Kiev.
