14997 Journal on Education, Volume 05, No. 04, Mei-Agustus 2023, hal. 14990-15002 Some of them are just out of Juvenile Hall. One or two might be wearing ankle cuffs to monitor whereabouts. And you see here, we’ll have to revise your lesson plans. And if you look at their scores, these vocabularies lists and some of these, the books, Homer’s The Odyssey, they are going to be too difficult for them. Erin: All right. office and discussed about work and the circumstances of school, so they use formal style in their conversation. It is included of the characteristic of formal style. The word and you see here instead of do you know. In addition, Erin still uses formal style in the next dialogue. Consultative style The researcher found some examples relate to the consultative style used by Erin Gruwell in the movie of “freedom writer”. In this context the consultative style such as unfinish statement and short answer; it also can be no respond. The conversation as seen in table 3 below: Table 3. Consultative Speech Style Conversation Analysis Eva: I have to go to the bathroom Erin: Okay, make sure that you take a… Eva: Yeah, I know. The dialogue indicates the signals of consultative style, because there is unfinished statement which is uttered by Erin “Okay, make sure that you take a...”. This conversation occurred in school between teacher and students. From the dialogue above we can see that Eva cut Erin’s because Eva does not respect Erin as her teacher. Thus, it shows that there is no close relationship since Eva gives short response to reply Erin’s question. Erin also used the consultative style in her instruction. Casual style Casual style was the most frequent style used in this movie. There were some dialogues held in casual ways. In this movie, there were 2 prominent structures which often used. The first was ellipsis and the second was slang. Researcher began with conversation between main character and Marcus as seen in table 4 below. Table 4. Casual Speech Style Conversation Analysis Marcus: Do you know anything, home girl. Erin: No, I don’t Marcus! So why don’t you explain it to me. Marcus: I aint’ explain shit to you! One categorized this tyle as casual style. Marcus says “you don’t know anything, home girl”. Home girl was referred to someone who doesn’t know anything. The function of these words indicates that the participant has close relationship but it is not appropriate to use because teacher has higher status than student. So, they should show their respect to the teacher. Moreover, teacher challenges Marcus to explain more about what he knew. But the sentence used by Marcus “I ain’t explaining shit to you! “Has a closest meaning that he will not explain anything to Erin. But he uses the word shit, which should be anything. Speech Style Analysis: Sociolinguistic Perspective, Taufiq Kurniawan, Siti Danti, Lala Nining Indrawa 14998 From these sentences, it can be seen the use of slang is appear in this conversation. This characteristic belongs to casual style. We can see the other example of casual style in the next situations. Intimate style Researcher found a bit of intimate style was used by the main character. The style was only used by relative or close friends. the first example of intimate style uttered by Erin and her dad as seen in the table 5 below. Table 5. Intimate Speech Style Conversation Analysis Erin: I’ll be right back. Steve: Oh, no, no, no, no. Erin, get back in the car. Erin: Dad, he lives right here. This conversation includes an Intimate style. The dialogue occurred in an informal situation. The response which given by the participants “oh,no,no,no,no. Erin, get back in the car” has close intimacy. Thus, the calling dad in the utterance “Dad, he lives right here” for father is an indication that Erin treats Steve as a close person. After the researcher analysed the utterance spoken by main character, the writer concluded that the main character in this movie used all types of speech style. However, casual style was the most prominent style used while the frozen style used only for once where the main character was in the court. Racial conflict influences the speech style Context situation, participants, setting, topic and function are basic factor that influence the main character in Freedom Writer movie in using the speech style itself. As (Budirsa, 2015) stated that different language background of the speakers in various communities will create different kind of language variety due to the different situation and social stratification of the speakers. So, the setting and the social context of the interaction – where are they speaking, the topic: what is being talked, the function: why are they speaking, may influence the use of certain style. There were some reasons that the main character in Freedom Writer speak in a different style. Firstly, the participants, who was speaking and who they were speaking to. The participant here also related to the social status. It was proved in some conversation, for example when the main character talking to Dr. Cohn, who had the high status, she used the formal language. The participants such as Eva, Jamal, Marcus, and Andrew used inappropriate styles in their daily communication although they were talking with the teacher. They prefer to use informal style while communicating with the teacher, it can be proved such as when Jamal call Erin speak by using the word “bitch”. The calling of bitch to call a teacher shows that Jamal had no respect to Erin, it also shows about situation at that time where all of students and the teacher in Woodrow Wilson High School never respecting 14999 Journal on Education, Volume 05, No. 04, Mei-Agustus 2023, hal. 14990-15002 each other. Furthermore, researcher believed the problem was encouraged because of the race problem where white people and black people were differentiated. It seemed in the beginning of the film where most of the students shew their unrespect action to their teacher because of their background status. Secondly, the setting also influence the use of speech style in Freedom writer movie. When in formal situation the main character choses to speak with formal style and in informal situation the main character was more relaxed to talk using casual style. Using slang word can indicate them that they are in informal situation and indicates that the student is in low status. They also can make the situation will be more relaxed by using casual one. The setting of this movie, which happen in the school, also influences the main character speaks in formal style and also consultative style. The third reason is the function, why they are speaking. The function here also relates to the purpose or the topic, what they were talking about. If they talk high information content, then their speech style will be formal and when they talk low information content like a gossip, their speech will turn into casual. Discussion The first style that researcher analysed was frozen style which was often used between Eva and prosecutor. However, the main character rarely used this style and the conversation was established in the court. On the other hand, the formal style showed about the conversation which took in some places such as in school and school office. Both of those places needed high formality in speaking so it can be said as a formal style. Moreover, it also described the use of formal style which has characteristic such as the use of short responses from the participants and the use of complex language. The consultative style was also often used in this movie. This style sometimes combined the formal and informal style which took place in school between the participants who do not have close intimacy. The use of short responses or blank words such as well, huh, emm indicates that consultative style reflects to the conversation. As can be seen in some fragment that the conversation occurred between teacher and student or between couple that the situation does not require high formality even between teacher and student has different status in society. The next style was casual style considered the most commonly used in this movie. This style occurred in an informal situation between friends or family. But in this movie, this style occurred between teacher and student. The use of slang words is commonly used by the participants. It showed that the student has no respect to the teacher who has higher status than them. Some dialogues showed casual style. The use of slang was also found here where participants used the words such as shit, damn, hell, and etc. So, it was concluded as the characteristic of casual style. The intimate style is commonly used by the people who have known each other and has close intimacy. In this movie it is shown by the participants such as between father and daughter of couple. There is correlation between language and society, it means that language become the most important part in human life. The function of language itself is establishing social relationship. There Speech Style Analysis: Sociolinguistic Perspective, Taufiq Kurniawan, Siti Danti, Lala Nining Indrawa 15000 were gap relations between student and teacher because of the race. Race was a grouping of human base on the physical shared and social qualities and it became created identity which refers to social dominance then establishing meaning of a social context. Furthermore, racism was crucial issue in Long Beach, California, which leading the differentiations between white skin and black skin in term of education, public facilities, employment, government, housing and so on. In detail, white skin had been dominant in important aspect of life such as economics, politics, and culture. The such unfair condition prompted black people struggle to their right. In the same time, racial conflict had been common issue and long story in America. Racism against various ethnic or minority group has existed in the united stated since the early colonial era. Throughout American history, white American have generally enjoyed legally or socially sanctioned privileges and right which had been denied to members of various ethnic or minority group at various time. White people enjoyed advantages in matter of education, immigration, voting right citizenship, land acquisition, and criminal procedure. On the other hand, black people or African Americans were enslaved and even afterward. They faced restriction on their political, social, economic and freedom. In addition, “Freedom Writer” was talking about discrimination treatment between white student and black student. Discrimination could not be separated with the racism because it was the significant effect of racism. The clear form of discrimination in the movie when the teacher rejected to discuss black people literature while white people literature always discussed. The teacher also justified the black people with sex, drug, and sexual abuse. In the movie of “Freedom Writer” the discriminatory occurred between educational institution at school and students in class 203 which contain many students from Black, Latin and Cambodian. Furthermore, Erin’s speech styles also were influenced by the circumstances where the main character faced racial conflict. Since most of the students were black and the teacher was white, so the black students thought that the teacher did not understand the condition of black people. It also made a gap between teacher and students. However, the main actor of the movie faced the race conflict in the right way such as formal style because it was serious conflict. In conclusion, contextual situation, participants, setting, topic and function influence a lot the style which are used in the movie of “Freedom Writer”. So, it can be said that the speech style cannot avoid those aspects. CONCLUSION The researcher presented the conclusion and suggestion based on the data and the suitable theory that has been analyzed in the previous chapter. According to the data that has been analyzed, it can be said that the main character of the “Freedom Writer” used five styles such as froze style, formal style, consultative style, casual style and intimate style. The most prominent in this movie was casual style and followed by formal style. On the other hand, the least used style was in between the 15001 Journal on Education, Volume 05, No. 04, Mei-Agustus 2023, hal. 14990-15002 frozen and intimate style. However. It is considered that the most infrequent style used was frozen style because the main actor only comes to the court once. In addition, this movie also showed the discrimination which occurred among the institution to the black students. While the students also used inappropriate speech style and it brought big impact to the teacher and students. Both problems of discrimination faced by the students and the students used inappropriate style encouraged the main actor had to adjust herself. However, Erin Gruwell used appropriate approach and suitable speech style that could solve the problems. REFERENCES Bucholtz, M. (2022).
