2. What approaches to the imagery do you know? Which approach do you think is more appropriate and why? What signals of imagery in the text do you know? Provide examples
One of the most famous category in fictional text is imaginary. If we look at history, we can across this term from the Ancient Period, especially, Aristotle and Zizeron’s works. A.A. Potebnya and V.V. Vinogradov found the term as the first description of the notion. If we look at the main structures of imagery, there are three main elements in text linguistics. They are as follows: Image referent Image agent Image basis. According to the scientists Kuxarenko and Arnord, most scientists point out that imagery is appeared by helping many stylistic devices – metaphor, metonymy, metaphorical epithet, antonomasia, metaphorical periphrasis, allusion, symbol. This approach is called Narrow approach. Because only with the help of stylistic devices we have to image about meaning and situation of the text. The second approach is called Broad approach. In this approach with the help of imagery all fictional texts are characterized. If we speak about second approach, according to the scientist Lotman and Todorov’s information, Imagery at the context of the text is not restricted to the of metaphorical means. It is implicit in factious text even though it does not involve stylistic imaging equipment. That is compensated for the fact that fiction is a true reproduction of reality, but e representation of an imagined universe. This conception is endorsed by academics who prefer to handle imagery at the plot stage of the text. In prose imagery allows writers to provide a detailed picture of the events. Below is an example of the successful use of imagery in the book “Once More to the Lake” by E. B. White. “When the others went swimming my son said he was going in, too. He pulled his dripping trunks from the line where they had hung all through the shower and wrung them out. Languidly, and with no thought of going in, I watched him, his hard little body, skinny and bare, saw him wince slightly as he pulled up around his vitals the small, soggy, icy garment. As he buckled the swollen belt, suddenly my groin felt the chill of death.” The situation describes the dampness of clothing, in the sections above, provide a sense of cold feeling that we’ve seen from the wet clothes.
