Check the answers. Explain that the topic sentence contains of the topic and a controlling idea. Ask participants to go back to handout 4 and identify the controlling ideas. Say that generally they provide the purpose of a writer.
Say that in the next stage they will practice writing the topic sentences from the titles.
Provide the sample:
Many events have affected my life. – is not effective because ‘many events’ is too broad topic and its central idea could refer to any changes at all – from insignificant to life-changing.
My move to Tashkent, to go to school was very interesting. – is also ineffective because ‘My move to Tashkent, to go to school’ is too limited but the central idea – ‘was very interesting’ - is much vague.
My move to Tashkent, to go to school caused me to change in ways that would affect the rest of my life. – is effective because the statement would work as a topic sentence for an extended paragraph. The topic ‘My move to Tashkent, to go to school’ is limited and its central idea ‘caused me to change in ways that would affect the rest of my life’ could be fully explained in one assignment.
Distribute Handout 5 to each group and ask them to choose the best topic sentence and to justify their choices.
