Participants will be able to write topic sentences from topics
Time: 25 min
Materials: Handout 4 and 5 for the groups of 3-4
Distribute handout 4 to the same groups. Ask them to do part 1 where they should read the statements and identify which of them are topics and which of them are topic sentences.
When they finish, check the answers and discuss the follow-up questions where they should tell the difference between the topic and the topic sentence.
Move to part 2. Ask participants to find titles from topic sentences. Check the answers.

Part One
Each of the following examples could be a title (T) or a topic sentence (TS). In each of the spaces provided, identify the example by writing T – for topic or TS – for the topic sentence.

How have you identified the topic and topic sentences? What is the difference?
Part 2
Find the topic in each of the following topic sentences. For each example, ask yourselves this question: “What the topic is the writer going to discuss?” Then, underline the topic.
Taking care of a house can easily be a full-time job.
One of the undisputed goals in teaching is to be able to offer individualized instruction.
Violence on television is disturbing to most child psychologists.
Much highway advertising is not only ugly but also distracting for the driver.
My favorite room in the house would seem ugly to most people.
