Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to examine the linguistic features of
Joanna Rowling’s Harry Potter book series, to address issues of translating nouns,
reporting verbs, adjectives and other words and analyze how they are used.
Meanwhile, in comparison of Uzbek and English version of the novel, other
translation issues are defined. The approaches of translating word and word
phrases will be described based on their context. Overall, this research sheds lights
on the fantastic magical world of Harry Potter books to make its spells and potions
scenes much more understandable for readers.
Key Words: Occasional words, Muggles, Quidditch, Potterism, Author’s
Neologisms, Volde, mort, Draco, Draconuc.

Introduction: J.K.Rowling is one of the most successful authors in the world
who came into limelight within lots of obstacles and hardships of life. The book of
Harry Potter series brought her not only fame but even success. Nevertheless, it
wasn’t easy for a single mother at the beginning as her work was rejected by 12
publishers. But it has become readers all-time favorites and best seller book of the
world. The bright example is its movies which were immensely popular among
audiences with its phenomenol characters. With regards of books, language played
a major role to depict details of each character and scene.
This is because Joanna Rowling skillfully chose words, word phrases to create
magic world, environment, and language of Harry Potter book series. As it is stated
that the words created by an author and used only in his work are called occasional
words that are not used in everyday life. (1) It is also mentioned that these kinds of
words are called author’s neologisms (2). What does the term neologisms mean?
In literature, neologisms are characterized in a variety of ways. A neologism is
defined as "a new word, expression, or usage...(or) the creation or use of new
words or senses" (3) (Costello, 1997, p. 914 as cited in Flegal, 2008), according to
Pavlievi-Frani (2005) (4) , who also notes that a few researchers identify
neologisms as lexical terms which withstand in the language and are in line with
all of that language's standards. Despite the fact that coinage is the general term
for a newly developed lexeme, Crystal (2003, p. 132) (5) proposes that the terms
the absence words and neologisms can be distinguished: "a nonce word (from the
16th-century word for the nonce, which means for the once) is a lexeme created for
temporary use, to solve an instantaneous issue of conversation, while a neologism -
in fact a "new word"
Neologisms can be found throughout life, but according to Crystal (2003, p.
132) (5)"the more innovative the language context, the more probable we are to
run into lexical experiments, and to discover ourselves facing unusual neologisms,
which is particularly evident in the language of literature," As a result, a variety of
neologisms have been employed in the works of numerous contemporary authors,

172
including Lewis Carroll in Through the Looking-Glass (portmanteau terms), James
Joyce in Finnegans Wake (puns), and Ulysses (juxtapositions).
The term “potterisms” has been added into vocabulary to define group of
words specifically in Harry Potter book series. Hence, this paper mainly examines
the translating problems which hindered to convey the portrayal of sciences and
characters as expected.
