contrasting characters, circumstances, images, compositional
elements, concepts, phenomena and signs, creating the effect
of sharp contrast, is called juxtaposition. This technique is able
not only to contrast concepts, but also to emphasize the
paradoxical comparisons, the greatness of the object,
universality, when contrasting properties are attributed to the
object. So D.E. Rosenthal gives the following definition:
―Juxtaposition is a stylistic figure that serves to enhance the
expressiveness of speech by sharply contrasting concepts,
thoughts, and images‖ [5].
When using another stylistic technique, such as
comparison, a visual image arises when two explicitly
expressed
meanings
of
the
characterized
and
the
characterizing interact. It should be noted here that
comparison is a less powerful means of creating a clear visual
picture than metaphor. On the other hand, comparison is
characterized by the presence of so-called similarity scales,
which makes it possible to strengthen or weaken the sign of
comparison by replacing comparative words.
A characteristic feature of the comparison is that it
can explicitly emphasize certain aspects, qualities, features of
the object being characterized, for example: Richard Tarleton
stood straight as a lance, and had been handsome as Apollo.
The use of this technique is very common in fiction.
Comparison is often used as a compositional technique, or
serves as the basis for the deployment of the image [12].
A.I. Efimov in his work argues that comparison is a
comparison of the described persons, characters, events,
paintings with images with which the reader is familiar in
most cases. As a result of this comparison, what is depicted
seems to be concretized, becomes more obvious and
expressive [13].
Another ―helper‖ of the author in creating the image
of the hero, to some extent, is hyperbole. Hyperbole as a
stylistic device is widespread not only in our everyday speech,
but also in works of fiction, as a very effective linguistic
means in terms of expressiveness. It is intended to exaggerate,
exceed or anticipate any characteristic of a measure of quality,
quantity, degree or mode of action, events, processes and
states in the daily activities of native speakers. According to
the famous philologist A.I. ―Hyperbole is a stylistic figure of
explicit and intentional exaggeration, in order to enhance the
expressiveness and emphasize the said thought‖[14].
Accordingly, writers can use this trope if they want to
―elevate‖ their hero above others in order to highlight his
special qualities. In such cases, hyperbole fits perfectly.
Analyzing other stylistic techniques, we can say that
such techniques as, for example, litota, etc., which are not
based on the representation of one subject through another
independently, that is, not in combination with metaphor,
metonymy or comparison, are not able to create a figurative
picture.
As mentioned above, images create an opportunity
to convey to the reader that special vision of the world that is
contained in the text and inherent in the hero, author or his
character and characterizes them. Therefore, images have a
key position in the development of ideas and themes of the
work, and when interpreting the text, they are considered as
the most important elements in the structure of the whole.
The artistic work differs from real life in that it
contains information about the characters, their characters and
thoughts, their life stories are not only invented by the author,
but also selected and organized in such a way that they serve
the realization of the author's idea, that is, the creation of an
artistic image. If in real life an event occurs on a clear sunny
day, then it is a matter of chance. If the same thing is
described in a work of fiction, then this is already the author's
choice. The author could not mention the weather at all if it
does not affect the image, but could ―make‖ the sun shine to
emphasize the bright, joyful mood of the characters. Unlike
real life, there are no accidents in a literary text; there are only
means of creating an image.
Any literary work reflects the ideas, life experience
and attitude to the events of its author, condensed into symbols
that can convey emotions. These symbols and emotions,
expressed using the above means, give importance to the
characters of certain ideas and feelings of the heroes of
literature, create the illusion that what we are reading about, or
about whom we are reading, lives its own life and is an
important component of a work of art.
