If y o u have something difficult on your plate, get it d o n e first thing in the morning. Arrange your daily tasks from hardest to easiest. M a n y people begin their days with routine tasks like checking e-mail. W h e n y o u do that, however, you'll often expand your easy tasks as a w a y to procrastinate because y o u know that something more difficult is c o m i n g up next. There's no motivation to work quickly because you'll only be punished for your efforts with a harder task a h e a d , so you'll naturally slow d o w n . This habit will frequently lead to the most difficult tasks being put off until the next day. This kills your power because the challenging tasks y o u delay are often those that will have the biggest positive impact. On the other h a n d , if y o u complete your tasks in order of decreas- ing difficulty and do the worst first, then w h e n e v e r y o u finish a task, y o u ' r e always rewarded with an easier job next. This will motivate y o u to maintain a fast t e m p o throughout the day. There's no reason to slow d o w n w h e n y o u have something easier c o m i n g up. Put the routine tasks at the end of the day, and w a t c h h o w m u c h faster y o u get your work d o n e . I've been absolutely amazed by h o w big a difference this habit has m a d e for m e . I used to check my e-mail first thing in the morning, and it w o u l d take me about an hour to handle each day's correspondence. N o w I prefer to process my e-mail later in the day, and it takes me an average of 15 to 30 minutes. I type simpler, more concise messages because w h e n I'm finished, my workday is over. 65 PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR SMART PEOPLE Take your personal rewards at the end of the day, not the begin- ning. Saving the best for last will give y o u something to look forward to, and you'll find that your evenings are m u c h more rewarding.
