andrew linklater
Andrew Linklater is a British international relations scholar who is best known for his contributions to the study of international ethics and the transformation of international society. The main postulates of his thought are:

  1. Transformation of International Society: Linklater argues that international society is undergoing a transformation, moving from a society based on the principle of the balance of power to a society based on the principles of cooperation and mutual benefit. This transformation is driven by a number of factors, including the growth of international institutions and the increasing interdependence of states.

  2. International Ethics: Linklater is also known for his contributions to the study of international ethics. He argues that the traditional realist approach to international ethics, which focuses on the self-interest of states, is inadequate. Instead, he argues for a more cosmopolitan approach that takes into account the interests of all people, regardless of their nationality.

  3. Constructivism: Linklater is also associated with the constructivist school of thought in international relations. Constructivism holds that ideas and norms play a crucial role in shaping international relations, and that the development of these ideas and norms is a key factor in the transformation of international society.

A relevant illustration of Linklater's ideas can be seen in the development of the European Union (EU). Linklater's argument that international society is undergoing a transformation is supported by the creation of the EU, which has moved away from a society based on the balance of power to a society based on the principles of cooperation and mutual benefit. This transformation has been driven in part by the growth of international institutions and the increasing interdependence of states, as well as by the development of common norms and values among the member states.
Another example is Linklater's analysis of the role of human rights in international relations. Linklater argues that the development of human rights norms has played a key role in the transformation of international society, by challenging traditional realist assumptions and encouraging states to consider the interests of all people, regardless of their nationality. This has important implications for international relations, as it highlights the importance of international ethics and the role of norms in shaping the behavior of states.
