terry nardin
Terry Nardin is an American international relations scholar who is best known for his contributions to the study of international ethics and the relationship between international relations and moral theory. The main postulates of his thought are:

  1. The Ethics of International Relations: Nardin is known for his work on the ethics of international relations, and in particular, the relationship between morality and the international system. He argues that the international system is not simply a product of material power relationships, but also of moral norms and values.

  2. The Nature of International Norms: Nardin argues that international norms are a crucial aspect of international relations and have a significant impact on state behavior. He also argues that international norms should be understood as moral standards that states are expected to follow in their international conduct.

  3. The Relationship between Ethics and International Relations: Nardin believes that ethics and international relations are closely related, and that an understanding of the ethical dimensions of international relations is essential for understanding the behavior of states and the functioning of the international system.

A relevant illustration of Nardin's ideas can be seen in the response of the international community to the use of chemical weapons in Syria. The use of chemical weapons is widely considered to be a violation of international norms, and the response of the international community, including the United Nations (UN), has been shaped by these norms. The UN's condemnation of the use of chemical weapons and its efforts to investigate and hold those responsible accountable demonstrate the role of international norms in shaping the behavior of states in the international system.
Another example is the response of the international community to human rights abuses. The promotion and protection of human rights is widely considered to be a moral obligation of states, and the response of the international community to human rights abuses is shaped by this ethical norm. For instance, the creation of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and its role in holding individuals accountable for war crimes and crimes against humanity demonstrate the relationship between ethics and international relations that Nardin argues is essential for understanding the international system.
