Introduction. Medicinal plant has been used since ancient times as a medicinal product
for the treatment of diseases, for their prevention or for other purposes, as well as as a vegetable.
Due to these useful properties, their cultivation on a national scale, breeding and study at the
scientific level, the development of new types of medicines based on the results of their study,
and their use in medicine are one of the main tasks of the healthcare sector. Of course, it is
believed that the specific beneficial property of each plant directly depends on its chemical
composition. It is indisputable that the useful minerals and elements contained in it provide its
medicinal properties. The article will provide information on the chemical composition of the
medicinal plant Momordica charantia L, belonging to the pumpkin family, which is native to
India.
Momordica charantia L. (bitter melon) is a plant belonging to the pumpkin family and is
widely distributed in tropical and subtropical areas around the world, mainly in Asia, India,
China and Brazil, where it is traditionally used as a medicinal plant, and the fruits of some
varieties of Momordica charantia L are eaten as food. Studies have shown that this plant contains
a wide variety of biologically active compounds with therapeutic potential, such as charantin, α-
momorcharin and MAP30 (Momordica antiretroviral proteins), and emphasizes its antidiabetic,
anti-ulcer, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anthelmintic, antihyperglycemic and antitumor properties.
The review is aimed at updating the phytochemical and pharmacological knowledge about
Momordica charantia L, which would be useful to researchers in their search for new chemical
compounds of the plant, studies of its safety and efficacy, as well as evaluating its possible
synergistic effect in combination with other antimicrobials to find new therapeutic agents,
alternatives against bacterial resistance [1]. In addition to anti-bacterial properties, active
chemical components with hypoglycemic properties are also contained in the fruits of the plant,
described below in the main part of the article.
