The different types of renditions will allow me to identify which items are the most 
difficult for interpreter trainees. On the one hand, a close rendition is considered as 
correct, while, on the other, a divergent rendition usually means that a mistake has 
been made. The other types of renditions are, however, much harder to judge, but 
some of them correspond to Gile’s interpreting strategies and tactics (1995: 129-
135). The strategies of explicitation and paraphrasis are equivalent to the 
expanded rendition. To the reduced rendition may correspond two other strategies, 
namely simplification (not rendering all the elements) and the restitution on a 
higher level of abstraction. Finally, the zero rendition may be equivalent to the 
omission (a conscious omission when the interpreter does not have enough time 
to process the information and does not recall what the speaker said).
