Chapter II Literary analysis of the novel “ Oliver Twist”
2.1. “ Oliver Twist”. Plot and main characters of the novel
The novel begins the journey of the protagonist Oliver Twist. Orphaned at birth, Oliver spends most of his childhood on a “children’s farm” (an orphanage) where there are too many children and too little food. The farm is located 70 miles from London. One night, after Oliver had pulled out a bowl of porridge, he asked for more. This is unacceptable and Oliver is sent to work as an apprentice to the master. Eventually, after several insults, Oliver escapes and makes his way to London. Soon he finds himself in the presence of Artful Dodger, and he tells him to stay at the house of the "old gentleman" with a few other children. Oliver knows that these boys were taught to pocket. While walking outside, Oliver witnesses the children take a handkerchief from an elderly man, Mr. Brownlow, and urge Oliver to flee in fear and confusion. The old man finds Oliver guilty of his actions and arrests him. However, as he learns more about Oliver, Mr. Brownlow realizes his mistake and offers to take care of him at home.1
Oliver now thinks he has escaped Fegin and the pickpockets, but his knowledge of his crimes leads them to search for Oliver. Nancy, the prostitute and lover of Bill Sykes, one of Fagin's men, is sent to take Oliver back to Fage from Mr. Brownlow. He succeeds, and Oliver, along with another member of the group, is sent to a robbery operation in a village near London. During this mission, Oliver is shot in the arm and then taken away by his family (Meili) who is trying to kidnap him. When he is there, a man named Fegin and Monks conspire to get him back. When Rose Meile travels to London with her family, she meets Mr. Brownlow to talk to Nancy, who escaped the Sykes, and explains Monks and Fegin's plans for Oliver's return. He describes the monks and tells them when it is easiest to catch them. Unfortunately for Nancy, the news of her betrayal reaches Sykes and he beats her to death. Soon, Sykes accidentally hanged himself. Mayli unites Oliver with Mr. Brownlow, who forces Monks to explain himself. The reader and Oliver are then informed that Monks is Oliver's stepbrother and that Oliver is entitled to a large fortune. He takes his share of the money, Fegin hangs out, and Miley, Oliver, and Mr. Brownlow move to the village and spend the rest of their days there together.
Oliver Twist - The protagonist of the novel, Oliver Twist, is nine years old at the beginning of the novel, and a few years older at the end (it is unknown exactly how much time has passed; he must have been about twelve years old) ...
