ENHANCING STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY BY USING TEACH VOCABULARY WORDS BEFORE A 
NEW ACTIVITY STRATEGY AT SMPN 1 BANGKO KABUPATEN MERANGIN

ABSTRACT 
 
This study reveals about the improvement of the students in learning vocabulary 
by using teach vocabulary words before a new activity strategy. The method of this 
research was classroom action research. The participants of the research were the 
students at the seventh grade of SMPN 1 Bangko Kabupaten Merangin Provinsi Jambi. 
The instruments of this research were observation sheet, task and recording. The finding 
of the research found that the students could enhance their vocabulary and they felt 
enthusiast in learning it.

INTRODUCTION 
 
In learning English, some students 
especially young learners felt lazy and 
were not confidence when the teachers 
asked them to speak and write something. 
One of factors is about their vocabulary. 
They are lack of vocabularies, they are 
difficult to look for the suitable and right 
English vocabularies for their conversation 
and writing. According to Linse (2005: 
121) Vocabulary is the collection of words 
that an individual’s knows. It means that 
vocabulary is a word which people must 
know when learning foreign language. If 
they do not know and master in it, they 
will feel difficult to master in a 
language.Then, Wilkin (1972) said that 
without vocabulary nothing can be 
conveyed. 
It 
means 
that 
without 
vocabulary the students cannot speak and 
write something in English, they cannot 
express their skill in a language. So, 
vocabulary is one of important skill if 
people want to master in a language. 
When the teacher taught vocabulary
sometimes teacher found some difficulties 
in looking for the approprite techniques or 
strategies for the students. Because some
students feel lazy and do not like to learn a 
language especially English. They thought 
that English is difficult one because the 
writing of English is different with the 
pronunciation. In addition,Most of the 
students think that English is not their 
language and they never use this language 
in their conversation. 
When the researcher did pre 
observation, she found that the students 
at Junios High School Especially SMP N 1 
Bangko did not want to speak and write 
because they did not know the vocabulary 
in English. For example, they just kept 
silent and did not want to do anything 
because they did not know the vocabulary 
in English. Then, when the teacher spoke 
in English, they felt difficult to understand, 
because they did not know the meaning of 
the words.After that, when the teacher 
asked the meaning of the word in English, 
they just laughed and did not answer 
teacher’s question. 
Based 
on 
these 
problems, 
the 
researcher interested to help students in 
learning vocabulary. Here the researcher 
used teaching vocabulary words before a 
new activity strategies to help them in 
learning vocabulary especially at Seventh 
Grade.
