Strategies for Teaching Vocabulary
There are some strategies that can be
used by the teachers for teaching
vocabulary for Jnior High School students
or young learners.Accoding to Linse
(2005), there are some strategies or
techniques which can be used for the
teacher when teaching vocabularies for
young learners.
a) Emphasize both direct and in direct
teaching
It means that teachers teach
vocabulary direct instructions refers
to give the meaning, then teaching
vocabulary with indirect instructions
refers to the teachers let the students
to look for the meaning of words by
themselves. For example : Direct
instructions, the teachers give a
picture of fruit and the name of fruit
in English. Indirect instructions, the
teacher give the prefix of “ bi” , the
teachers give a pic of bicycle and the
students look for by themselves the
meaning of picture by prefix “bi”.
b) Teach vocabulary words before a new
activity
It means that the teachers
give stimulate to children before
learning or teachers give a word that
has related with the topic before the
learning process. The teacher also
brings something that has related
with the topic.
For example :
T : I have two things in my pocket,
who want to see it
S : Me...Me
One students come to the teacher
and see in teacher’s pocket.
S : Oh candy and bread
T : You want it?
S : Of course..
Teacher give it to the students.
The ilustrate above shown that the
teachers give a new word in other activity,
the teachers do not teach with permen is
candy and roti is bread, but the teacher
give a stimulate to the students to think
the meaning of word by themselves with
the activity. As we know that, the students
at elementary school have more energic to
remember the meaning of word which
they are interested in.
c) Teach how to use context clues
appropietely
In this activities, the teachers
teach the vocabulary for the young

 Volume 1 No.2 November 2019 17
learners from the context. For example
:The teachers give a clue like someone
who sell a flower. Then, the students
guess who is she?. After that, the
students will guess that she/ he is a
florist.
d) Present Multiple exposures to new
vocabularies item
According to National institude of
Child Health and Human Development
in Linse (2005 :126) young learners
make educational gains when they are
exposed to vocabulary items repeatedly
in rich contexts. It means that when
teaching vocabulary for young learners,
the teachers have to make the students
remember the words every day. For
example,if the teachers want to teach
about things in the kitchen, so the
teachers asked the students to bring a
picture of something in the kitchen.
Then, next week the teachers must
make a game which use the picture
things in the kitchen.
e) Give opportunities for deep processing
of vocabulary item
This strategy give the students
opportunity to use their cognitive skill
to make a connection between new
words and their prior knowledge. For
example, when the teachers want to
teach about something in a house, so
the teachers let them to think or write
that they know about the name of thing
in their house. When the students find
the difficulties, the teachers can help
them in giving the name of something
in English.
f) Teach students to use dictionary
Here, the teacher asked the
students to open the dictionary to
look for the meaning of the word. For
example,
the
teacher
gives

dictionary which has picture of the
words and ask the students to look
the picture. Then, ask them to read
the name of picture in their
dictionary.
g) Students keep vocabulary notebooks
It means that, the teachers asked
the students to make a picture about
the vocabulary and remembered the
vocabulary by themselves.
Futhermore,
there
are
some
strategies in learning vocabulary from
Murcia (2006) that can improve students’
vocabulary, they are :
a. Semantic mapping
Semantic mapping can help
the teachers to teach their students in
learning
vocabulary,
semanting
mapping is an activity that helps
students to bring the consciousness
relationships among words. It means
that, the teachers make a map which
connected with the words and asked
the students to learn it. For example,
if the teachers want to teach the
vocabulary about things in house, so
the teachers make a mapping about
things in house.
b. Word pairs
Word pairs also can help the
teachers to teach the students in
learning vocabulary. The teachers
word pairs then ask the students to
look for the suitable words which has
the same meaning.
c. Guessing meaning from the context
It can help the teacher to teach
their
students
in
improving
vocabulary, because it will make the
students feel easy to get or catch the
meaning from the context.
d. Mnemonic Devices
This strategy asks the students to
memory the word and make link with
their first language in order to make
the students or young learner to
remember the meaning of the word.
e. Vocabulary Notebooks
This strategies, teachers ask the
students to make a note about all the
words which they do not know the
meaning and looking for the meaning.
Vocabulary note will help the
students, because they will ease to
read their own word and remember
what they write.
In this research, the researcher used
the strategies teaching vocabulary words

 Volume 1 No.2 November 2019 18
before new activity. She gave some words
that have related with the topic before
they are in learning process. The teacher
also brings something that has related
with the topic.
