Location and Population 
Bukhara region is situated in the southwestern part of Uzbekistan with most of its territory 
occupied by the Kyzylkum desert. It borders with Turkmenistan, Khorezm, Navoi and 
Kashkadarya provinces, and the Autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan. The area of 
Bukhara region is 39.4 thousand km².
As of April 1, 2020, the permanent population in Bukhara region was 1929.1 thousand people.

6.4.2.3
Economy 
The most developed industries in this region are textile, silk and cotton processing. Plant-
growing branches are grain and cotton growing. Bukhara cotton is a raw material for the 
textile industry. Fruit, vegetables, melons and grapes are cultivated in the region and there are 
enterprises for processing agricultural products. There is also a good development in cattle 
breeding. The region has great potential in the processing and production of ready-made 
leather goods. Traditional Uzbek crafts are also widespread. 
Bukhara region possesses significant natural resources, especially natural gas (most of the 
republic's re-serves), oil, graphite, bentonite, marble, and limestone. The extraction and 
processing of oil, natural gas, and precious metals are also significant in the region. 
There are 31 deposits of natural mineral resources in Bukhara region, of which 19 deposits are 
currently in use - graphite, tile stone, limestone, sand required for the production of silicate, 
concrete and bricks. The major part of these deposits is located in the following district: 
 
Alat district (gas and condensate 
– 293.8 million m³, technical salt - 100 thousand 
tons); 
 
Karaulbazar (gas - 66751 million m³, condensate - 2104 thousand tons, oil - 9119 
thousand tons);

Kagan (macadam - 265 thousand m³) and;
 
Shafirkan (macadam - 110 thousand m³).
The region's deposits of gypsum amount to 46.3 thousand tons, limestone 
– 21.1 million tons, 
quartz 
– 35.9 million tons and graphite – 805.9 thousand tons. 
The region is one of the largest fuels and energy industries in Central Asia. Large industrial 
enterprises, such as Bukhara Fuel Storage (which produces high-quality gasoline, diesel fuel, 
fuel oil, jet fuel and other petroleum products) operate in the region, FE "DEU Textil Bukhara" 
(textile industry), JSC "Shohrud" (production of alcoholic beverages), JV "Bukharagips" (gypsum 
production), JV "Uzkarpet", JV "Bukharagilam", JV "Textil Spectrum Colors", JSC "Kogonyog", JSC 
"Buhorodon" (production of food products). 
The main export products are cotton fibre, energy resources, food products and services and 
the region has a Gross Regional Product (GRP) of 30,758.1 billion Uzbek Soums.
