English for Academics Teachers Guide Book 2

Writing
11, 12 As the writing activity will take some time, you
could give it as homework.
Follow-up
13 If time allows, do the first step of this activity in
class. Either prepare the required guidelines beforehand
or make sure learners can access them online in the
classroom. Discussion of the pros and cons of publishing
internationally would be a great way to end the Module!
Module wrapping-up
This brief self-evaluation and reflection activity aims to
give learners a sense of another milestone reached in
developing the skills necessary for their academic careers.

Presenter: In terms of submitting articles, I can’t stress this
enough: always refer to the instructions for contributors
because there will be specific instructions for each journal,
which differ from journal to journal. Also, when you are
sending in your article, send with it your covering notes
that explain the rationale for the paper. This is really your
opportunity to say why the paper is important, why it’ll make
a difference. So do take this opportunity, as it may help with
the publication process, with the editorial board of the journal.
Remember, if there are co-authors, submission of the paper to
the journal is taken to mean that everyone involved with the
paper has seen the final version and given it their approval, so
don’t be tempted to send in the paper until everybody in the
writing team has seen and agreed to the final version.
Once your paper has been submitted, it’s possible that there
may be revisions required and it might even be rejected
after the peer review. Typical reasons for rejection would be
insufficient originality, serious scientific flaws, the absence
of a message that’s important to the target audience, and
sometimes, being simply descriptive with very little effort
at evaluation. So, if the paper is sent back to you after the
peer review, and there are comments and suggestions from
the reviewers, it’s important that when you resubmit your
paper you give the journal editors a point-by-point detailed
explanation of how you’ve addressed each of the reviewers’
and editors’ comments and concerns. And in that process it’s
important to be … again to take a positive tone, er, just going
through each point and saying how you’ve addressed the
concerns of the reviewers.
After the acceptance of the paper, the publisher will be doing
many things to prepare the paper for publication, including
copy editing and proof-reading. They will be taking care of
online delivery of the paper, and also providing usage statistics
on the paper at the journal and article level. If there is a print
component, of course, they will be getting that ready, too.
