DEVASHTICH REBELLION 
2021 marks the 1300th anniversary of the uprising against the Arabs in the Zeravshan Valley. In 
the events of 103 AH / 721-722, Tabari mentions the king of Sogd and the ruler of Samarkand 
Devashtich, who rose to fight against the Arabs. The legend of Tabari about Devashtich became 
popular among orientalists after documents were accidentally found on Mount Mug that extracted the 
name and deed of Devashtich from the dust of centuries.

Abdukhamid Pulodi, and then the then scientific secretary of the Tajik base of the USSR Academy of 
Sciences A.I. Vasiliev carried out excavations in the Muga castle, first on their own, and then in 
November 1933 as part of an expedition of the USSR Academy of Sciences led by A.A. Freiman. As 
a result, 81 manuscripts were found in the fortress, the language of which is fully identified, except for 
the language of one document written on leather. 
It was determined that a significant number of these documents, including those written in 
Arabic, were associated with the name of Devashtich. 
The study of an Arabic document found in this fortress by scientists I.Yu. Krachkovsky and 
V.A. Krachkovskaya managed not only to clarify the history of the text, but also for the first time to 
introduce the name of Devashtich (Devasti) into historical scientific circulation, as well as the 
historical situation at the time of the destruction of the castle. 
Based on historical sources, the author of the article analyzes the historical events of 721-722 
that took place in Sogd, including the Zeravshan Valley, the central of which was the uprising of 
Devashtich.
