Pound sterling
The pound sterling (£, GBP) is the currency of the United Kingdom, the British Overseas Territories, British Antarctic Territory and British Indian Ocean Territory. The pound sterling is the world's oldest currency still in use. It is currently the third-largest Reserve currency, after the US dollar and the euro.
The full, official name «pound sterling» (plural: pounds sterling) is used mainly in formal contexts. The term «pound» is normally used. The term «British pound» it is not an official name of the currency.

I. Прочитайте и переведите текст со словарём. William Stanley Jevons William Stanley Jevons (1835–1882), one of the leading English economists of the XIX century, was born in Liverpool. At the age of fifteen he was sent to London to attend University College where his favourite subjects were chemistry and botany. Jevons broke off his studies of the natural sciences in 1854 to work as an assayer in Australia, where he acquired an interest in political economy. Returning to England in 1859, he entered again as a student at University of London and gave his principal attention to economics. He was as a brilliant writer on practical economic questions. He expounded in his book «The Theory of Political Economy» (1871) the marginal utility theory. Jevons’ work marked the opening of a new period in the history of economic thought.
