MATLA (or Matla’) – It is a poetic term. It means the first two lines of poem. It was used for ghazal, qit’a and qasida. “I read this lines in that night: “Takalluf har necha suratta bo’lsa, ondin ortuqsen, / Seni jon derlar, ammo betakalluf jondin ortuqsen” p.14[“B”, p.99 on folio a]. With whatever artifice your portrait is made, you are still more. / They call you “soul,” but without artifice you are more than a soul [Wh. Thackston. – 1996, p.115] In this context the word “matla” means whole the ghazal beginning with these lines, that he intended to write. The first line of the poem was used as the title of the poem as there was no title in oriental lyrical poetry. So it was required to compose memorable and short, which was the highest degree of poem writing.

MAFOSIL – It is a medical term of Arabic origin. It stands for “ache in anchylosis, rheumatism”. “Sultan Husain could not pray as he had rheumatism in his joints” [“B”, on folio. 164].

MAXDUMI A’ZAM (Eng. Mahdum Azam) – It is a name of a religious scholar, sheikh of Islam, who lived in the XV th century in Mawaraunnahr. His full name was Sayyid Ahmad Hajagi Ibn Sayyid Jalaliddin Kasani and was born in 1461 in Kasansai, Namangan region. He was sheikh of Naqshbandiya precept in Samarkand, where he studied in madrasah. Later he came to Tashkent and became a khalifa for Muhammad Qazi, an apprentice of Khwaja Ahrar in 1516. He met with Abdurahman Jami when he travelled to Herat. He developed the Naqshbandiya precept by both theoretically and practically and wrote more than 30 books. Jonibek Sultan invited him to Karmana in 1514, and gifted him large lands in Miyankul valley. The village Dahbed where Mahdum Azam lived turned to famous pilgrimage place for the Muslims, the fame of the sheikh reached even Khurasan and India. Babur, Ubaidulla-khan and Janibek Sultan considered him as their “Pir (spiritual mentor)”. According to information of written in book “Muzakkiri ahbob” Babur had very good and close relation with Mahdumi Azam. Babur sent him a big piece of gold in got as “nazira (gift)” and attached a couplet beginning with “Dar havoi nafsi gumroh umr zoe’ kardaem, / Peshi ahlulloh az atvori hud sharmandaem”.P15. Meaning. Because of the greed for this world, we have our lives defaced. / Our own deeds have us among godly people disgraced. [translated by Aida Bumatova] Mahdumi Azam in his turn sent Babur his book “Risolai Baburia” as respond to his gift. Besides that, he wrote book titled “Risolai shahri ruboiyot”. Mahdumi Azam also wrote many allegories to rubais by Ubaidulla-khan too.

MAHDUMI OLAM (Eng. Mahdumi Alam) – It is a name of military chief from Bangola. He came up to the banks of the Gandak river in 1528 with his army and settled them in the places along the river into twenty-four pieces. Hearing the news Babur thought that there would be a possibility of war so sent Shakh Iskandar against them with 300-400 soldiers. [“B”, on folio. 368 a]
