3. Providing context: Providing context can help the learner better understand when to use expressions of agreement and disagreement in their native language. This can involve giving examples or scenarios that highlight the appropriate use of these expressions. For example, explaining how to agree or disagree during a business meeting or during a conversation with friends.[32,1633-1650]
A) English: I agree with you.
Context: During a meeting, discussing a proposal.
Spanish: Estoy completamente de acuerdo contigo en la propuesta que acabas de presentar.
B) English: I disagree with your opinion.
Context: Having a political discussion with a friend.
French: Je suis désolé, mais je ne suis pas du tout d'accord avec ton opinion sur la question.
C) English: I see your point.
Context: Discussing a business strategy with a colleague.
German: Ich verstehe deine Perspektive in dieser Angelegenheit und denke, dass sie sinnvoll ist.
D) English: I respectfully disagree.
Context: An academic discussion between two professors.
Japanese: 失礼ながら、私はあなたの意見に反対しますが、あなたの意見を尊重します。
E)English: I totally agree with you.
Context: A group of friends discussing a movie.
Italian: Sono completamente d'accordo con te sulla valutazione del film, anche io ho trovato la trama molto interessante.[41,56]
4. Incorporating cultural norms: Incorporating cultural norms into language teaching can help learners better understand the appropriate ways to express agreement and disagreement in their native language. This can involve discussing cultural values, behaviors, and norms that influence communication and expressing opinions in the learner's culture.[33,67-90]
A)English: I agree with you.
Context: Meeting with business partners in a Middle Eastern country.
Arabic: أنا متفق معكم، و هذا يعني الكثير بالنسبة لي (Ana mutafaq maa-kum, wa hadha yu»ni al-katheer bil-nisba Lii). Most Middle Eastern cultures value diplomacy and prioritize building a harmonious relationship with others. It is customary to emphasize the importance of the agreement during business interactions.
B) English: I disagree with your opinion.
Context: Discussing a scientific theory with a group of Japanese researchers.
Japanese: そう思いません (Sō omoimasen). In Japanese culture, it is common to communicate disagreement in a subtle and indirect way as to avoid causing offense. The phrase «Sō omoimasen» is often used to gently suggest a difference of opinion.
C) English: I see your point.
Context: Debating a social issue with a group of indigenous South American activists.
Quechua: Yachana kani (yachanakani). In many indigenous languages in South America, there are no direct equivalents for the English words «agree» and «disagree». Instead, phrases like «yachana kani» in Quechua are used to signify that one understands and acknowledges the point of view being presented by the other person.
D) English: I respectfully disagree.
Context: Negotiating a deal with a Chinese business partner.
Mandarin: 我有不同意見,但是我尊重你的意見 (Wǒ yǒu bùtóng yìjiàn, dànshì wǒ zūnzhòng nǐ de yìjiàn). In Chinese culture, the concept of «face» holds great importance. Disagreeing with someone publicly or aggressively is viewed as disrespectful and harmful to their «face». Softening one's disagreement with phrases like «zūnzhòng nǐ de yìjiàn» (I respect your opinion) is often considered a more appropriate way to communicate differing views.
E) English: I totally agree with you.
Context: Catching up with a friend from Spain.
Spanish: Estoy completamente de acuerdo contigo, por supuesto (Estoy completamente de acuerdo contigo, por supuesto). In many Spanish-speaking cultures, it is customary to communicate with passion and enthusiasm. The phrase «por supuesto» (of course) is often used to communicate agreement with a strong sense of conviction.
