T h e Pareto principle is the 80-20 rule, w h i c h states that 80 percent of the value of a task comes from 20 percent of the effort. Focus your energy on that criti- cal 20 percent, and d o n ' t overengineer the noncritical 80 percent. 14. R e a d y - f i r e - a i m . Bust procrastination by taking action im- mediately after setting a goal, even if the action isn't per- fectly planned. You can always adjust your course along the way. 15. M i n u t e m a n . O n c e y o u have the information y o u need to make a decision, start a timer and give yourself just 60 seconds to make the actual decision. Take a w h o l e minute to vacillate and second-guess yourself all y o u w a n t , but c o m e out the other end with a clear choice. O n c e your decision is m a d e , take some kind of action to set it in motion. 16. D e a d l i n e . Set a deadline for task completion, and use it as a focal point to stay on track. 17. P r o m i s e . Tell others of your commitments so that they'll hold y o u accountable. 18. Punctuality. Always arrive early for appointments. P u n c - tuality enhances authority. 19. Visualize your goal as already accomplished. Put yourself into a state of actually being there. M a k e it real in your mind and you'll soon see it in your reality. 2 1 . Prizes. G i v e yourself frequent rewards for achievement. See a movie, schedule a professional massage, or spend a day at an amusement park. 2 2 . Priority. Separate the truly important tasks from the merely urgent. Allocate blocks of time to work on critical tasks, those w h i c h are important but rarely urgent, such as physical exercise, writing a book, and finding a rela- tionship partner. 2 3 . C o n t i n u u m . At the end of your workday, identify the first task you'll address tomorrow and set out the materials in advance. T h e next morning, begin working on that task immediately. 24. Slice a n d d i c e . Break complex projects into smaller, well- defined tasks. Then focus on completing just one of those tasks. 2 5 . S i n g l e - h a n d l i n g . O n c e y o u begin a task, stick with it until it's 100 percent complete. D o n ' t switch tasks in the middle. W h e n distractions c o m e up, write t h e m d o w n to be dealt with later. 26. R a n d o m i z a t i o n . Pick a totally random piece of a larger project, and complete it. Pay one random bill. M a k e one phone call. Then select another random piece and repeat. 27. Insanely b a d . Defeat perfectionism by completing your task in an intentionally terrible fashion, knowing y o u never need to share the results with a n y o n e . W r i t e a blog post about the taste of salt, design a hideously 152 Habits > dysfunctional Website, or create a business plan that guarantees a first-year bankruptcy.
