Build a new habit by tacking a task onto one of your existing habits. W a t e r the plants after y o u eat lunch. That's a real card, not an e-card. This is rare and memorable, and the people y o u thank will be eager to bring y o u more opportunities. 37. T r a i n i n g . Train up your skill in various productivity habits. Increase your typing speed to at least 60 words per min- ute. Learn to speed-read. Improve your communication skills. 38. D e n i a l , just say no to noncritical requests for your time. If people get upset with y o u , let t h e m . 39. R e c a p t u r i n g . Reclaim other people's wasted time for yourself. Visualize your goals during dull speeches. Write out your grocery list during pointless meetings. 40. M a s t e r m i n d . Explain your most challenging problems to several other people, and invite all the advice, feedback, and constructive criticism y o u can handle. 4 1 . T w e n t y . On a piece of paper, write d o w n 20 creative ideas for improving your effectiveness. 4 2 . C h a l l e n g e r . Deliberately make the task harder since chal- lenging tasks are more engaging and motivating than boring ones. Perform physical chores such as filing or cleaning with your nondominant h a n d . Run errands at unpopular times to avoid crowds. Shop just before stores close or shortly after they o p e n . Take advantage of 24-hour outlets. 5 5 . A g o r a p h o b i a . Shop online w h e n e v e r possible. G e t the best selection, consult reviews, and purchase items within minutes. 5 6 . R e m i n d e r . A d d birthday and holiday reminders to your calendar a month or t w o ahead of their actual dates. Buy gifts then instead of at the last minute. 57. Do it n o w ! Recite this phrase over and over until y o u ' r e so sick of it that y o u cave in and get to work. 58. C o a c h . Hire a personal coach to stay motivated, focused, and accountable. 59. I n s p i r a t i o n . Read books and articles, listen to audio pro- grams, and attend seminars to absorb fresh ideas and inspiration. 60. G y m rat. Exercise daily. Boost your metabolism, c o n c e n - tration, and mental clarity in 30 minutes a day. 6 1 . Troll h u n t . Banish the negative "trolls" from your life; and associate with positive, happy people instead. M i n d - sets are contagious. Be loyal to truth, love, and power, not to your pity posse. 6 2 . Evil e y e . Practice your best evil eye in a mirror, and use it liberally on anyone w h o enters your space to interrupt your most important tasks. 156 Habits 6 3 . P o l i t i c i a n . T h r o w m o n e y at your problems until they eventually succumb. H o w many of your problems can be solved more easily if y o u define t h e m in financial terms? C a n y o u justify the cost of hiring an assistant, a babysit- ter, or a cleaning service? 64. M o d e l i n g . Find people w h o are already getting the re- suits y o u w a n t ; interview t h e m ; and adopt their attitudes, beliefs, and behavior. 6 5 . Proactivity. Even if others disagree with y o u , take action anyway, and deal with the consequences later. It's easier to request forgiveness than permission. 6 6 . R e a l life. Give online activities (such as g a m i n g , reading blogs, or posting on forums and message boards) a rest, and reinvest that time into your real life, w h i c h , if you're a gamer, is probably suffocating beneath a pile of d e a d , smelly ores. All habits are not equal, so take the time to form important ones that can make a real difference in your life and those of others. For example, the habit of journaling helps me solve problems and gain new insights, and the habit of blogging allows me to share w h a t I've learned with other people. In both cases I'm typing on my computer, but blogging is the more impactful habit. Often the simplest w a y to make a habit more significant and meaningful is to find a w a y to share it with others.
