Activity 4 Write the letters.

Objectives: to learn two more letters of the alphabet – Mm and Nn; to practise writing the letters; to consolidate the letters.

Ask the pupils to look at the letter “Mm” and say what pictures are next to the letter (melon, mother and mouse). Play the DVD and ask the pupils to listen and repeat the letter and the corresponding picture. Also draw their attention to the way the letters are written. Then ask the pupils to open their Workbooks and start writing the capital letter “M” and then small “m”. Ask them to look at the example and follow the arrows. If necessary, demonstrate on the blackboard. Then repeat the procedure with the letter “Nn”.

Note: 1. If some pupils are very slow at writing don’t worry. Ask them to continue writing at home. The main point is to learnhow to write and how to pronounce the letter.

2. After the pupils have practised writing the letters for sometime you can work on the pronunciation of the letters “M” and“N” as follows:

STEP 1: Write the words “melon”, “mother” and “mouse”and the sound [] under or over the letter “m” on the left sideof the blackboard. Then say that the letter “M” is always pronouncedas [] and it does not give more than one sound. Afterthat have the pupils repeat this sound and the words after youindividually, in rows and chorus.

STEP 2: When you finish with Step 1, write the words “nine”and “nose” and the sound [] under or over the letter “n” on theright side of the blackboard. Then say that like “M”, the letter“N” also gives only one sound and is always pronounced as [].After that have the pupils repeat this sound and the words after you individually, in rows and chorus.

Suggestion: Go on making a pronunciation poster as you didduring the previous lessons. In this lesson you can make completeposters for the sounds [] and [] of the letters “M” and “N”.
