COMMUNICATIVE FUNCTION
•The communicative function of phraseological units is their ability to serve as means for communication or message transfer;
•Communication presupposes a mutual exchange of statements, and message presupposes the transfer of information without a feedback from the reader or the listener:
E.g. A burnt child dreads the fire.
NOMINATIVE FUNCTION
•Nominative function is naming objects and situations of the real world, filling in lacunas in the lexical system of the language, or creating phraseological synonyms to existing lexemes thus enriching the language world picture:
•E.g. 1. Swim like a fish/drink like a fish;
2. Bold as a lion/weak as a kitten;
3. Dark horse; black sheep; dirty dog;
4. Skeleton in the cupboard.
COGNITIVE FUNCTION
Language is considered to be the main tool of communication and human cognition and conceptualisation; Language is a means of storing and transmitting information and different knowledge structures which are verbalised in linguistic expressions (Ashurova, Galieva 2018)
PhUs represent the most powerful cultural and conceptually relevant language units which reflect conceptual thinking and reasoning of the native speakers in the most expressive ways
E.g. To put the Thames on fire; to play with fire; to be between two fires; to be a ball of fire; etc
