Introduction
The period when Victoria (1837-1901) was Queen of England was called the "Victorian Period".
Although it was one of the most peaceful and prosperous times in Britain, problems in the social structure persisted.
During this period, the baby boom began, which led not only to population growth, but also to the development of industrialization. The development of England as a society led to an increase in demand for labor for both adults and children. The children worked hard as miners, pipe cleaners, farm workers, houseworkers. Due to the invention of the railways as a result of the Industrial Revolution, some children were even forced to play the role of railroad workers.
Child labor became a major problem in the early 1800s due to the lack of efforts by the upper class to improve working conditions.
One of the most important forms of child labor was in coal mines. The children had to work 14 to 18 hours a day in mines full of rats and disease, as well as in poorly ventilated mines.
Undoubtedly, such a difficult social situation also worried the writers who wrote at that time. They tried to reflect in their works the negative situations that took place in society. One such writer was Charles Dickens. The author himself suffered from the poor state of the legal system in England.
