value-added or non-value-added. Value-added activities are
those activities that cannot be dropped without negatively
affecting the quality of the output. Non-value-added activities
could be excluded without affecting the quality of the output.
Resource costs are assigned to activities. Next, activity costs
are assigned to outputs. The costs that cannot be specifically
traced to activities or outputs are then allocated as overhead to
outputs. This need to justify costs as adding value to a product

Non-factory costs are accounted for as period costs.The
firm’s product costs do not include these fixed and variable
costs, as they are not part of the inventory or part of the cost of
goods sold.These costs are period expenses. No asset value carries
over to a future period. Period costs include the following:
• advertising
• commissions
• sales salaries and wages
• all other selling costs
• administrative salaries and wages
• all other administrative costs
• interest costs
• income taxes
Both process and job-order costing lock fixed costs into inventory.
As we’ve learned, this lowers cost of goods sold and increases income
on the income statement while increasing the inventory asset on the
balance sheet. Do not compound this distortion like some dot-com
companies did. Keep period costs separate.
What Is SWAG?
As you may know, SWAG means “scientific wild ass guess.”
And sometimes cost assignments are adjusted for reasons
that are not smart. For example, sometimes upper-level managers
direct that costs be assigned to departments because they want to
make it much harder for lower-level managers to meet performance.
Such directives are not strategic, but punitive. So, there are also other
factors at play here.The smart manager recognizes that this is the real
world and sometimes the people who pull the strings don’t do so with
the best motives.
