Writing in the ESL classroom
Writing requires acquiring such skills as planning and organizing, spelling, punctuation, word choice aptitude. Furthermore, lack of vocabulary and grammar aptitudes, problems with translation and deficiency of reading, listening and speaking proficiencies also can be listed as one of the obstacles to achieve the progress in writing. Generally, language is split into two major skills, receptive skills and productive skills. Receptive skills are skills needed to perceive and understand the language. Receptive skills consist of reading and listening. Learners receive language Бъдещите изследвания - 2020 ★ Volume 10 32 by listening to conversation, music, video and also by reading comprehension, newspaper, poem, book, etc. Meanwhile, writing and speaking belong to the productive skill of the language. Productive skills are skills which enable students to supply language by themselves [3:265]. On the opposite hand, productive skills are required for learners to be ready to build communication through the language. Moreover, by obtaining the knowledge in the sphere of reading and listening, they can produce more advantages in writing. The products of the writing skill do not boggle time or distance because you can read and rewrite them. People need permanent records which could be referred to over and over again. In addition to this, we are used to prefer written language, which will not cause any confusion, misunderstanding, or misinterpretation to the readers, to spoken language. Writing is a teaching process which requires critical thinking process and is used as a means of communication to express his ir her own or someone’s thoughts into words. Thus mastering writing skill is so important. Writing is a productive skill of the English language which needs to be mastered by the English language learners because writing is a means of communication and is taken into account because the indicator of communication competence of the target language. A good writing skill represents learners’ ability in communicating through English. A teacher of English can face some obstacles while teaching writing skill to the students who learn English as a foreign language. Writing is a combination of reading, speaking and listening skills with grammar and vocabulary competences. Thus acquisition of writing skill requires mastering of the whole unity. If the teacher is asked to teach the students whose English knowledge is absolutely poor, it will be a challenge. Language learning can appear as a puzzle in which both the language learner and teacher—as scientists engaged in puzzle-solving—try to discover the pieces and fit them together [2]32 Summarizing the facts which are given above, we can list some challenges which can cause problems in writing.
