Wordplay (playfulness)
A separate category for wordplay is in some ways superfluous since many of the examples noted so far are instances of, in some way or another, wordplay; this is clearly not a category that is mutually exclusive with any other of the categories discussed in this study. This separate category of wordplay is only included to emphasize those instances whose main workload is less about creating ‘new’ words and strings which can alter perception and more about providing a vehicle to make us experience interesting ambiguities or “meaningful coincidence” or “convergence that affects meaning” in ways that invite exploration. 15) a. THE BEATITUDES: (Incoherently) Beer beef battledog buybull businum barnum buggerum bishop. b. Ahbeesee defeegee kelomen opeecue rustyouvee doubleyou. Boys are they? c. The delegation, present in full force, consisted of Commendatore Bacibaci Beninobenone […], Monsieur Pierrepaul Petitépatant, the Grandjoker Vladinmire Pokethankertscheff, the Archjoker Leopold Rudolph von Schwanzenbad-Hodenthaler, Countess Marha Virága Kisászony Putrápesthi, Hiram Y. Bomboost, Count Athanatos Karamelopulos, Ali Baba Backsheesh Rahat Lokum Effendi, Senor Hidalgo Caballero Don Pecadillo y Palabras y Paternoster de la Malora de la Malaria, Hokopoko Harakiri, Hi Hung Chang, Olaf Kobberkeddelsen, Mynheer Trik van Trumps, Pan Poleaxe Paddyrisky, Goosepond Prhklstr Kratchinabritchisitch, Borus Hupinkoff, Herr Hurhausdirektorpresident Hans Chuechli- Steuerli, Nationalgymnasiummuseumsanatoriumandsuspensoriumsordinary- privatdocentgeneralhistoryspecialprofessordoctor Kriegfried Ueberallgemein. Buybull in (15a) has the potential meaning of accepting ‘bull’ i.e. ‘nonsense’ and simultaneously playing on the sound similarity with bible (there is also the double entendre of bull which can also mean a papal decree). In (15b) the sounding out of the alphabet contains at least two obvious puns opeecue (oh pee cue) and double you. Example (15c) contains multiple puns, several of them utilizing more than one language. Nearly all the names are clever satires expressed as wordplay, all woven into the list of delegates and their titles titles: Bomboost, Petitépatant, Karamelopulos, Trik van Trumps, Hi Hung, Hupinkoff and of course, the wonderful Kriegfried Ueberallgemein, whose first name Kriegfried would literally mean ‘warpeace’ and last name, Ueberallgemein would translate as ‘overall’ or ‘universal’ (presumably playing off of the lyrics to the German national anthem at the time).
