Notsofigureoutable: iconicity & onomatopoeia
In most cases in which a spelling creates a word that is uninterruptable or difficult to interpret, that
process would lead to an altered semiosis and would therefore be more properly handled under that
rubric (see above). In some cases, however, unusual spellings create an effect of iconicity, much like
in today’s ‘textspeak’ in which spellings such as soooooo boooooring are used not only to express
(very obviously) that something is boring, but also the repeated letters signal a drawn-out
pronunciation and also show, through the symbolic relation between a drawn-out spelling and a
drawn-out referent that something is boring:
24
17) a. It soared, a bird, it held its flight, a swift pure cry […] all soaring all around about the all,
the endlessnessnessness ...
b. Her wavyavyeavyheavyeavyevyevy hair u
n com: ‟d.
24
This similar process can be seen, for example, in Circe in which the voice of Adonai calls with words like
dooooooooooog and goooooooooood which most likely emphasize an intended pronunciation, but could also have, at
least in the case of good, an iconic effect, i.e. a longer word good represents something very good.

c. His mouth moulded issuing breath, unspeeched: ooeeehah: roar of cataractic planets,
globed, blazing, roaring wayawayawayawayaway. Paper. The banknotes, blast them. Old
Deasy’s letter

d. Nationalgymnasiummuseumsanatoriumandsuspensoriumsordinaryprivatdocentgeneral-
historyspecialprofessordoctor Kriegfried Ueberallgemein.
Example (17d) is especially interesting since the perceived pompousness and bombastic nature of the
German system of stacking titles are reflected here with a very pretentious title (note that the pun in
the name has been mentioned above).
In others examples of iconicity, there is more of an onomatopoetic effect,
25
or rather a merging
of lexical meaning with an imitation of sounds (in either an authentic or symbolic way), such as in
doggy-bowwowsywowsyWeeshwashtkissimapooisthnapoohuck, or haltyaltyaltyall. Consider also
the following:
18) The car jingles tooraloom round the corner of the tooraloom lane. Corny Kelleher again
reassuralooms with his hand. Bloom with his hand assuralooms Corny Kelleher that he is
reassuraloomtay. The tinkling hoofs and jingling harness grow fainter with their tooralooloo
looloo lay

The repeated tooraloom phrase which resonates throughout the example is presumably from a
popular music hall song.
26
Though the semiotic process here is arguably altered in a way similar to
those items mentioned above, I feel there is arguably more emphasis on the effect of an extended
echoing of a sound which then becomes encoded in the spelling.
