Creativity, Playfulness and Linguistic 
Carnivalization in James Joyce’s Ulysses

Introduction 
James Joyce’s modernist tour-de-force, Ulysses, is widely recognized as being one of the most 
innovative and groundbreaking novels in English, not least because of its experimental techniques, 
ingenious structuring and unorthodox language. For a wide variety of casual readers, Joyce fans and 
linguaphiles, much of the pleasure in reading Ulysses is derived from cracking its various codes and 
savoring the semiotic potential of the novel’s neologisms, ambiguities and wordplays. For other 
readers, however, the style seems impenetrable; the verbal fireworks, brain-teasers and gratuitous 
linguistic eccentricity taking precedence at the expense of comprehension and flow, often slowing 
down the process of perception and turning the reading into an academic exercise rather than a 
pleasure. Regardless of one’s preferences concerning Joyce’s style, his writing skills as they are 
expressed in Ulysses, with its full repertoire of style-shifting, language play and other linguistic 
tricks, has undeniably attracted a great deal of academic attention and leaves no one indifferent.
The primary objective of this article is to examine, via a systematic corpus study, questions regarding 
linguistic creativity, verbal playfulness and ‘linguistic carnivalization’ in James Joyce’s Ulysses. 
How does Ulysses do what it does linguistically and can a digital ‘dissection’ of the text contribute to 
understanding Joyce’s style in new ways? A secondary objective, which is a natural consequence of 
the first, is to discuss the value and potential of an empirically-positioned, corpus-based analysis of a 
literary text. Can a corpus-stylistic approach, using concordance software and corpus-based research 
techniques, provide a useful basis for an exploration of the text?
