Guidelines for TESL 5220 Final Project

Important: Include all of this additional material in the same assignment document. To be clear, do not include links to slides, worksheets, etc. (there have been too many issues with documents that require special log ins, permissions, subscriptions, etc.). When preparing a portfolio for potential employment, you will be expected to have all materials together and easy for review (this professional expectation is being made in this program to prepare you for this). It may help to convert all documents to PDFs and then combine them into one final document. Label each activity or task to make it clear where each one begins.
Differentiation (aligned to TESOL Standard 3): Two of your activities or tasks must be developed or modified to provide clear opportunities for differentiation. The differentiation must be done to meet the specific needs of your learners (e.g., differentiation for ELs in a mainstream classroom, differentiation for lower-level students, differentiation for newcomers, and differentiation for more advanced students). Be certain to include sufficient instructions to explain the differentiation and fully developed materials (e.g., version A for most students and version B for the group receiving differentiated instruction)
Annotations (aligned to TESOL Standard 3): In addition to including annotations for your language objectives, include annotations throughout each activity and task. Use the full range of annotations as appropriate and be certain to annotate for differentiation [D]. Also include annotations of estimated time for each activity or task. When relevant, include the amount of time for steps that are parts of activities or tasks (e.g., students working in groups, time to do free writing)
Reflection (aligned to TESOL Standards 4 and 5): Write a reflection (in sentences and paragraph format) that addresses the following: A brief summary of your needs assessment including explicit discussion of at least one appropriate assessment, set of standards, or framework (e.g., WIDA, TOEFL, CEFR) that helped inform your needs assessment and the writing of your language objectives (see Week 3 - Suggested Viewing - Websites for External Assessments or Frameworks). Describe the syllabus type(s) and methodology/ies that more closely resemble the instructional context and that informed your lesson plan development. Also address how your lesson plan will help prepare your target learners for the next level on your chosen assessment, standards, or framework. Justify your selection and ordering of activities in your lesson plan; be certain to explain how these activities and tasks in this order will meet the needs of your learners.Describe your choices in differentiation and how these choices will meet the needs of all of your learners. Your reflection must include at least three relevant references from the course readings. Remembeer that websites will not count as references. Be certain to include APA citations for all referenced material. Also be certain that all references are relevant (i.e., do not simply include a quotation to get another citation)
