Language objectives (TESOL Standard 1)
Language objectives may be unclear or written too generally (e.g., SWBAT speak about X, SWBAT to write about X); lack of specificity makes the objective more difficult to develop instructional activities or tasks for
Language objectives are included but may need revision to ensure clarity and relevancy to the described instructional material; objectives may be difficult to properly plan instruction for and/or assess
At least three clear and assessable language objectives are included; objectives address more than one language skill; annotations are included, and most are accurate; the objectives are relevant to described instructional material and included assessments
Language objectives have been clearly written and annotated accurately; objectives cover a range of language skills; objectives are specific in terms of language skills and could serve as model objectives for other teachers
Number of Activities or Tasks (TESOL Standard 3)
Either there are not enough activities or tasks, they are not enough original activities, or they fail to address the lesson objectives
The minimum number of activities or tasks has been met but they may not adequately address the lesson objectives
There are at least three original activities or tasks, OR at least two pre-existing and two original activities; these three or four activities or tasks adequately address the lesson objectives
The minimum number of activities and tasks is exceeded and the developed and/or modified activities and tasks completely address the range of content and language objectives
Instructional outline of activities or tasks (TESOL Standard 3)
Details about instruction are either too general or vague; the reviewer has trouble understanding how instruction is related to objectives
A general outline is provided but it may not be completely clear how instruction will address the language objectives; annotations may be missing, minimal, or not properly used
Outline includes sufficient details on the instruction (may be unclear at times); instruction addresses most of the language objectives; annotations are included (but several may be inaccurate)
Outline includes relevant and succinct details on the instruction; instruction clearly addresses the language objectives; relevant and appropriate annotation are used throughout
