1.3 Translation of film titles as proposed by Moya (2002 )
Movie titles and news headlines have from a translation point of view, some undeniable family resemblances if we focus on the analysis of the strategies used in translation.

In the present case, we will focus our attention on the proposed categorization of these by Virgilio Moya (2000: 147-160).

For one, Moya (2000: 147-148) proposes, after analyzing countless translated film titles (and their originals), the following classification of general features:

  1. Movie titles are translated freely in most cases.

  2. They look like being taken out from the Spanish genuine pen, i.e. , they have undergone a process of naturalization in the translation from English or French to Spanish .

  3. The argument is the basis:

The first factor that the translator (or team of translators) considers to rename a film is obviously its argument, and to the evidence we refer: most of the titles mentioned here have been motivated by the theme of the movie (Moya 2000:148).

  1. Emphasize the operational role. In the words of Moya (2000 : 148):

“What they want, finally, translators of film titles are to attract the attention or interest of the audience, or what is the same, highlighting the operational role.”
The importance of operational role in translating film titles is explained by Moya as follows (2000: 149):
... It is fair to say that the title can increase the number of viewers, something always difficult to measure, because who knows if the film would not yield the same with another title (...) How many readers will have stopped reading El Rodaballo ( Günther Grass) by the title, or Coños by their explicit vulgarity, and many viewers have missed the Bigas Luna movie( Jamon, Jamon , La teta y la Luna (the tit and the moon ) or a film called ¡Vacas! (Cows).
The family resemblances to the scope of the headlines seem undeniable. However, without doing a field study we cannot say how much the movie titles resemble titles translated by the written press.

Regarding the strategies used in translating the Spanish movie titles, Moya suggests the following categorization:
