Habits and Truth
To apply truth to your habits, take a m o m e n t to assess the habits you're already running. W h a t are your best habits? W h a t are your worst? Do y o u have any addictions? Do these habits serve y o u well or hold y o u back? Do they help y o u align with truth, or do y o u feel c o m - pelled to lie about t h e m ? W h a t habits are y o u hiding? W h a t habits are y o u most proud of? Grab a piece of paper and brainstorm t w o lists: a list of your posi- tive habits and another list of your negative habits. H o w do y o u know if a habit is positive or negative? Use your mind's predictive powers to imagine w h a t long-term, cumulative effect each o n e will have if y o u maintain it for the rest of your life. H o w will it benefit y o u ? W h a t will it cost y o u ? W h a t does the long-term outlook suggest? If y o u could snap your fingers and change this habit immediately, w o u l d y o u do so? Be brutally honest with yourself. Then accept any unpleasant truths y o u discover, even if y o u feel powerless to change t h e m . N o w brainstorm a third list: all the new habits y o u ' d like to imple- ment. W h i c h n e w habits w o u l d enhance your life? W o u l d y o u like to b e c o m e an early riser, go vegetarian, or exercise daily? W h a t w o u l d your life be like if y o u gave up television, newspapers, and random W e b surfing? W h a t w o u l d happen if y o u only checked e-mail o n c e a day and used the time y o u saved to pursue a n e w h o b b y ? W h a t posi- tive n e w habits w o u l d y o u love to adopt—if only it w e r e possible to do so? If y o u successfully adopt these habits today, w h a t will your life look like ten years from n o w ? Review your three lists again, and ask yourself if you're willing to accept the long-term consequences of your current habits. Are y o u willing to live with the outcomes y o u predict, or w o u l d y o u like 139 PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR SMART PEOPLE to improve t h e m by making some changes? Is the status quo good e n o u g h for y o u , or can y o u do better? Bringing truth to your habits is an important step, but nothing will change if y o u don't take action. You must accept the greater truth that if y o u don't consciously and deliberately alter your habits, you'll continue reinforcing your existing patterns by default, and your pre- dicted outcomes will likely c o m e to pass. If y o u wish to improve upon those results, y o u must do whatever it takes to c h a n g e your habits now, even if y o u expect the process to be brutally difficult.
