O n c e y o u ' v e identified what's true for y o u with a reasonable de- gree of accuracy, your next task is to fully and completely accept the truth. This includes accepting the long-term consequences of your predictions. 10 Truth Consider your physical body. Is it healthy, fit, and strong? Or is it unhealthy, flabby, and w e a k ? W h a t do y o u predict will happen if y o u continue with your current health habits? Do y o u accept the truth of w h e r e you'll likely end u p ? Are y o u willing to live with those conse- quences? W h a t about your finances? Are y o u creating such an abundance of value that you'll never know scarcity? Or are y o u headed for the poorhouse? W h a t do y o u honestly expect to happen if your current financial patterns continue? Do y o u accept the complete truth of your situation? Of course there's tremendous uncertainty in trying to predict w h e r e your life is headed, but y o u can still aim for the most reason- able, rational expectation based on the available evidence. If y o u w e r e looking at someone else's life that shared the same qualities as yours and y o u had to place a w a g e r on the o u t c o m e , h o w w o u l d y o u place your bet? Pretend y o u ' r e Sherlock Holmes looking at the evidence and trying to predict the o u t c o m e . W h a t do y o u honestly expect? O n e of the most important skills to develop in the area of personal growth is the ability to admit the w h o l e truth to yourself, even if y o u d o n ' t like w h a t y o u see and even if y o u feel powerless to change it. W h e n y o u face unpleasant truths, you'll often encounter strong inter- nal resistance. This resistance pushes y o u to avoid facing the truth, running through endless cycles of distraction, escapism, denial, and procrastination. Only by staring directly into these truths can y o u s u m m o n the strength to deal with t h e m consciously. A simple rule of t h u m b is this: whatever y o u fear, y o u must eventually face. W h e n e v e r y o u ' r e faced with a part of reality y o u don't like, and y o u feel powerless to change it, the first step is to accept the truth of your situation. Say to yourself: This situation is wrong for me, yet I lack the strength to change it right now. Openly admit to yourself that even though you're stuck with c o m - plete responsibility for every area of your life, y o u may not have the ability to fix w h a t isn't working at this point. Simply accept that this is how things are for now, but don't deny the truth of the situation. Never pretend to enjoy a job y o u hate. Never pretend to be happy in an un- fulfilling relationship. Never pretend that your finances are strong w h e n 11 PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR SMART PEOPLE they're really weak. If y o u w a n t your situation to improve, y o u must first c o m e clean with yourself and admit the whole truth. W h e n y o u fully accept reality, you'll begin making better decisions because they'll be based on truth instead of fiction. If y o u admit that your body is terribly out of shape, you'll stop pretending that you're in good health. You'll stop subscribing to the delusion that your poor eating habits and lack of exercise are acceptable to y o u . You'll begin to see that y o u ' v e got to start making different decisions if y o u w a n t your situation to change—it isn't going to happen on its o w n .
