Social conditioning is a close cousin to media conditioning. T h e society in w h i c h y o u live—including your family, friends, co-workers, and acquaintances—contributes heavily to your understanding of reality. Through your interactions with others, y o u ' r e continually in- fluenced by social, cultural, educational, and religious ideas. Unfor- tunately, such conditioned beliefs often place other values ahead of truth, so y o u may feel compelled to do the same. In the long run, this disconnection from truth leads to self-doubt, causing y o u to give a w a y your p o w e r out of weakness and confusion. Realigning yourself with truth enables y o u to reclaim that power. Sometimes social conditioning serves us well. For example, a c o m - m o n language helps us c o m m u n i c a t e and connect with each other. Other times, social conditioning installs false beliefs that weaken us, such as an unwarranted fear of public speaking. 15 PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR SMART PEOPLE It's important to develop an awareness of your socially conditioned beliefs and examine t h e m consciously. W h e n y o u sense a conflict be- t w e e n your beliefs, your behavior, and your feelings, ask yourself if y o u really believe w h a t y o u ' v e been taught. Are your beliefs truthful and accurate? Are they congruent with your perceptions? In order to align yourself with truth, y o u must eventually release erroneous, inac- curate, and inconsistent beliefs. I w a s raised Catholic and attended Catholic school for 12 years. All of my family and most of my friends w e r e Catholic, too, so I had virtually no exposure to other belief systems in my y o u t h . Neverthe- less, in my late teens, I began to doubt w h a t I'd been taught because it often conflicted with my direct observations of reality. W h e n I finally admitted that Catholicism no longer resonated with m e , I felt free to explore my true spiritual beliefs. I w a s sometimes ostracized for this decision, but I learned that self-trust is more important than social conformity. My intent isn't to denigrate any particular belief system but simply to r e c o m m e n d that y o u put your greatest trust in your o w n judgment, even w h e n others disagree with y o u .
