Another  w a y to lovingly connect with others is to express genuine 
appreciation for  t h e m . Praise the other person for a recent  a c c o m -
plishment. Point out a unique talent or skill  y o u admire, or simply 
share a small detail that impresses  y o u . Do this only  w h e n  y o u truly 
are impressed. Never offer insincere praise in an attempt to manipu-
late someone. 
O n e of the organizations I belong to is Toastmasters International, 
w h i c h has thousands of individual clubs around the  w o r l d . The main 
focus of Toastmasters is to help people develop their communication 
and leadership skills. At a typical Toastmasters club meeting, every 
speaker receives a formal evaluation from another club member. A 
c o m m o n method for this process is called the sandwich  m e t h o d . First 
y o u tell the speaker  w h a t  y o u liked, and next  y o u offer some sugges-
tions for improvement.  T h e n  y o u close with some final praise and 
positive encouragement. This is an effective  w a y to deliver feedback, 
but it also facilitates stronger bonds between club members. Praise 
is built right into the meeting structure, so everyone  w h o speaks is 
guaranteed to receive some appreciation for their efforts. 
I've noticed that on the rare occasions a  m e m b e r is overly critical 
at these meetings, it negatively affects the spirit of camaraderie in the 
club, even  w h e n the criticism seems fair and accurate. I always feel 
more connected  w h e n we focus on the positive, including praising 
each other for a job well  d o n e and sharing  m a n y laughs. I leave such 
meetings feeling uplifted, encouraged, and supported.
