It was one of his last literary creation, he died in September 1883. The style of this story is strongly influenced by romanticism, mixing gothic and fantastic. The full title speaks by itself : Clara Militch After Death. It tells the story of a young actress with high ideals. One evening she meets Yakov Aratov, a misanthropic young man who has only one friend and who rarely goes in the world. She stares at him while singing and reciting Tatiana’s letter from Push- kin's Onegin in a Moscow salon. She falls in love with him, he is in- trigued. A few month later she takes her own life. No one really seems to know why except Aratov, who remembers how they met lat- er and how his nonchalant attitude might have been taken for rejec- tion and indifference. He is shocked and confused and tries to under- stand her gesture. He goes to her family to try to know more about her life. Then Aratov slowly falls hopelessly in love with the dead girl who appears to him as a spirit. 197 This theme of love after death was very popular in romantic ballets of the 19th century. One of its most shining example being Giselle, created on the libretto by Théophile Gautier. Gautier wrote several short-stories and novels on this theme populated by ethereal (thought sensual) creatures. Turgenev was a great admirer of his work, and Clara Militch seems to follows the steps of some of his writings. Choosing to create a ballet on a subject such as Clara Militch in the 21st century, is somehow a way of paying hommage to the ro- mantic tradition of ballet. Showing a world where reality and super- natural collides. The choice of using a neo-classical language of cho- reography seemed the most appropriate in a way that it gives more freedom of expression while retaining its original roots. The story being a short one, it was important to keep this fast narrative line and pace in the ballet. The music has of course a pri- mordial part to play on the dramaturgie of the piece. Sergey Prokofi- ev's 7th and last symphony, with in addition his 2-nd Pushkin Waltz as an introduction, seemed to fit almost perfectly to the story. The mood of the pieces is dominated by a strange melancholy and a nos- talgic atmosphere. The original version of Prokofiev's symphony, with its suspended ending (using glockenspiel and xylophone) illus- trates the unknown world where Aratov goes to join Clara. The fact that both works by Turgenev and Prokofiev were cre- ated at the end of their lives is a coincidence, but they both resonate with the same ideas. The role of a choreographer and of the dancers is to understand deeply the meaning behind these creations and to give an original interpretation. The symbiosis between the three art forms that are literature, music and dance merging to become one. |
