A number of + plural noun = Many – Plural verb
The number of + plural noun = The amount – Singular verb
e.g. A number of rules have been changed.
The number of not eligible students is ten.
The president presented a number of gifts to disabled.
A number of tourists visit Samarkand every year.
The number of visitors who visited Samarkand last year was around 30 thousand.

If the words cinema, theatre, opera etc come in the meaning of art, before them article the is not used. But if these words come in the sentence in the meaning of a place then we have to use article the before them.

e.g. We like opera. We went to the opera yesterday.
Josef loves theatre. We were at the theatre.
Visiting to the cinema is my hobby.
We really enjoy cinema.

Another – Singular, countable nouns
Other – Plural countable / uncountable
e.g. If I break my phone, I will buy another phone.
If you don’t want to work with us, we will move to another place.
One student is still asking questions about tenses, another student is asking about plurals. Are you studying guys?
Some people are sleeping, but other people are studying.
Can you give me other advice?
The teacher gave us other homework.
I don’t like these trousers. Let’s buy other trousers.


The other – singular countable noun – the last one
The other – uncountable noun – the remaining one
e.g. There are two ways to my house. One is short but dangerous, the other is long but safe.
This book has 3 parts. I have finished 2 parts. Now, I am going to buy and finish the other part.
My friend bought watch for half of his money and he gave the other money to me.
They have finished two thirds of their homework. But the other homework still left.

We can use another and others as a pronoun in our sentences.

e.g. Mike took my book and returned another mistakenly.
When we were wasting our time, others were studying.
New hotel is being built in our city instead of another.
This device doesn’t work. Can you give me another?
I came on time. Others were late.
