Confidentiality of Information
RTI wishes to create a safe work environment in which individuals are not afraid to discuss concerns and complaints. The confidentiality of the information received, the privacy of the individual(s) involved, and the wishes of the complaining person regarding action by RTI will be protected as much as practicable. Confidentiality will be maintained by RTI and those involved in the investigation, and information will be shared only on a need-to-know basis. Anyone involved in making a report or investigation of a complaint is expected to maintain the utmost level of confidentiality. Anyone found to have intentionally, and unnecessarily breached confidentiality will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination. HIV/AIDS Infection with HIV and the development of AIDS is a complex worldwide problem with far- reaching impacts for society. Employees infected with HIV are not normally expected to notify their employers of their condition. Individuals who are known to be infected will not be discriminated against or stigmatized in the provision of employment or services from RTI. Individuals who are infected with HIV will be expected to act in a responsible manner so as not to risk exposure or infection to their co-workers. HIV positive employees will be treated in the same manner as any other employee with a serious medical problem. Their employment rights and benefits will be preserved, and strict confidentiality will be observed. Employees will not be expected to take laboratory tests, nor will they be questioned about previous HIV tests or questioned or assessed in terms of lifestyle that may indicate high-risk behavior. No person shall be treated unfairly within the employment relationship or within any employment policy or practice because of his/her known HIV status. All company policies, including but not limited to those relating to absenteeism, sick leave, ill health, early retirement, and work performance, are applicable. An employee's health condition is private and confidential, and RTI acknowledges that a person with HIV/AIDS has a legal right to confidentiality about his or her HIV status. A person who divulges information without the consent of the affected employee will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination.
